Sometime in the late nineteen-sixties, the Republican Party realized that engaging with the American id could be a winning electoral strategy. The Democrats had chosen to embrace Civil Rights. Theyd chosen a side. Whats on the other side of that struggle? Whos against Civil Rights? Where do we find fear of change, of the unknown? Americas id.
..............
But the thing is you cant invoke hatred and fear and prejudices in your base voters for sixty years without paying a price. In todays Republican Party you can see this price everywhere. Reasonable adult men forced to pretend they dont believe in Darwinian Evolution, that they think the world is 6,000 years old, that guns arent a problem in American society, that they dont quite understand how hormonal birth control works, or what Planned Parenthood actually does. Why? Because theyve trained their voters to see the world in this narrow way, and the voters repay the favor by demanding they make it even narrower.
The GOP has spent sixty years stoking the worst impulses of their voters, and now they have the ultimate expression of those impulses in one oafish millionaire without a decent human emotion in him. Worse, as Trump increasingly speaks madness, his fellow Republicans are forced to join his madness, lest they get left behind.
...................
The Republican Party didnt do it overnight. They didnt have a great machine, so it took them sixty years to create a monster out of their collective id. But its here now, lit up and screaming and demanding to be heard.
You see Donald Trump doesnt know its supposed to be subtle, or a secret. He doesnt know you dont just say the most awful nightmarish thing out loud. He doesnt know how to use a dog whistle. Hes not a Republican politician. Hes the culmination of six decades of irrational stark terror building in the hearts of a certain portion of the population. Hes the monster from the GOPs id.

I wonder if the Krell had their own Donald Trump. If so, no doubt our Trump would have barely made the Krell machine budge.

(26,117 posts)7. Yep. They made him, & they're stuck with him. If they had any integrity at all, they'd disavow him..
...and take the loss. At least then they would seem to genuinely care about this country.
