I'll post links when I get a chance. I've got stuff on the grill.

(24,331 posts)And it's annoying when people present it as being a super-cure-all for everything. In this case it's rather obvious that if marijuana really killed cancer, chances are Tommy Chong would be the most cancer-free human being on the planet.
Yes, there's some research to suggest that THC demonstrates some qualities which MAY protect cells against cancer, but that's not the same as either curing it, or even being a sure thing that it really does have anti-cancerous properties. At this point people would be ill advised to ignore regular, proven cancer treatments in favor of smoking a lot of pot and hoping that it helps.

(28,784 posts)but there are some very good studies that do indicate a potential. however, nothing is a miracle... the reason cannabis may provide a treatment for cancer is because it kills off tumor cells by denying them access to cell nutrition - while leaving healthy cells intact.
One guy who has worked in this field all his life did post pictures of people whose tumors shrank - and there's the guy in CA who has an amateur vid - but neither of these rise to the level of scientific evidence via controlled studies.
And it's not just the THC that's involved. CBD, another cannabinoid, has shown some great results for cancer treatment in the human test phase to shrink brain tumors - but those tumors were already lethal. It did shrink them, however, by the process described above.
I don't think anyone would recommend that anyone forgo regular health care treatment.
But maybe Chong, since prostate cancer like his generally goes untreated, is making himself a public test subject. I'm sure his doctor is keeping track of the progress of the cancer.

(13,905 posts)How about "amazing"? I'm referring to the many, many uses of cannabis, from industrial hemp to the various medicinal uses, as well as the recreational value.
I call it a miracle herb, but I don't really even believe in miracles. I don't mean it literally, but it is arguably the most useful plant known to man.

(13,905 posts)Cannabis has showed promise in this area, and deserves further research, not prohibition.
Grilling may well cause carcinogens, but there are also quality of life issues involved here.

(28,784 posts)I don't know if this applies to him - but I heard a doctor on NPR the other day talking about balancing quality of life against treatment after a certain age for non-aggressive prostate cancer.
More than 80% of men will develop prostate cancer by the age of 80. However, in the majority of cases, it will be slow-growing and harmless. In such men, diagnosing prostate cancer is overdiagnosisthe needless identification of a technically aberrant condition that will never harm the patientand treatment in such men exposes them to all of the adverse effects, with no possibility of extending their lives.

So, after a certain age, it seems like old age in general will get you before the cancer does - and the treatment is more likely to get you than the cancer, too.

Actually, old age seems to put a lot of money into the pockets of big med and the heath insurance industry.
this is just one situation in which it doesn't.

(12,448 posts)all three have been treated to the hard sell by their respective doctors. Two are peripherally in the medical field so they know it's BS, but the third...
Putting your faith in the medical industry is the fast track to months of torture while they drain your assets. Once you're broke and the insurance company's not paying so quickly, then they let you die, but in excruciating pain of course, can't have you being addicted to pain meds, the DEA is always watching.

(13,905 posts)They opened for Blood Sweat Tears at some college we played. I was mixing monitors, and had nothing to do while Cheech & Chong were on stage. They had a little changing room right offstage, and asked me to sit in there and roll a bunch of joints.
