The Republican party doesn't have a choice; their voters selected Trump out of their "deep bench" of candidates, passing over more experienced politicians, and shit-canning the other amateurs. They did so with great enthusiasm, disregarding any baggage Trump was carrying, willfully ignoring his gaffes and slights, and positively reveling in his smack talk. The party pooh-bahs watched it happen, and actively encouraged it when Trump's shenanigans seemed to work in their favor.

Now? Well, it turns out those dirty fucking hippies who kept pointing out that that was all Trump had going for him were right again. Now the Republicans are stuck; those rabid supporters aren't going to burn out anytime soon, and if the Republican big shots are thinking of replacing Trump, they'd better be prepared for the backlash. They won't be.

I have been thinking this since talk started about it months ago.

Maybe he loses, maybe he loses really bad, and heck, he could maybe win.

But, what if they take the nomination from him?

As you noted, he and his unhinged following will blow that convention up. It will be chaos and possibly violence we have not seen in our body politic since the 60s, and maybe ever.

And, they may lose this election big, but if they do let it ride with Trump, they can say, "OK, we indulged the stupid, we can now go back to our normal well coiffed candidate who stands for all the bullshit Trump out and out shouts about, but only whistles at it, and they can go back to things as normal.

They take the nomination from Trump, and they will lose a LOT of those 13 million idiots who voted for him for a generation, and they have won a LOT of elections for a long time now because of those jackasses.

And, whoever they nominate, even the Ryan, will have a 1 in 1,000,000 chance of winning after the convention shit show and minus all the votes who sit it out over Trump getting jobbed.

will rip the party apart.

Lots of reports show that GOP donors are focusing their money on down ticket races and will let Trump Self Destruct.

I don't think he would win if the election were held today. He has won the majority of delegates and gained the support of the RNC chair, and Senate and House leaders. Even Bob Dole endorsed him. I cannot imagine that the Republicans will engineer some coup.

Replacing him at the convention through some kind of legalistic shenanigans would serve to further blow up the Repub party. I don't think even the Dems could blow this election after a clusterfuck like that.

And even if they do replace him somehow, the brand is so stained now that I think a ton of down ticket races will be affected and move farther toward the Dems. This could be an epic win for Dems akin to the FDR revolution of '32.

I think he might be purposely sabotaging himself so that they will replace him. If he stays, I think he knows he will lose, and more importantly leading up to the election the dems and media will expose all his dirty deals. He will be revealed as the greatest scamster ever, and any future business deals will evaporate for him.

On the other hand, if he is ousted, he can just say FU to politics, tell the world we had our chance, then sit back and critique all the mistakes that the next president makes in the future. And his followers will still worship him and walk around with "I told you so" posters.

I see this scenario as totally plausible.

The party would freak out if the person they voted for wasn't the nominee. As Starry Messanger said in another thread: "You undermine your entire organization when you have someone win by using the process and then tell everyone who participated that it was just for funsies. They are stuck with him."
