Odd considering how vocal they were about the gorilla that was killed to save a 3 year old child's life.

Everyone realizes that Disney truly fucked up by providing man-made beaches for young families to frolic on, while neglecting to post signs to warn said families that alligators were in the lagoon, were dangerous, could come out of the water fast, and that they loved to eat small mammals.
Alligators are not apes and are perceived as being way down on the evolutionary list, thus not anywhere near as valuable.
That poor child was killed -- in a horrific accident that chills the bones of anyone who knows a 2-yr-old. The attempt to catch and kill the gator that did this isn't bloodthirsty; it's an attempt to stop a gator that was willing to attack a human.
I personally thought the decision to shoot the ape was the correct one. I think what Disney is doing now is too little, too late, and they'll be paying out money in a lawsuit because they were too squeamish to warn people of the real dangers.

(9,729 posts)I have never tasted it, but I have no moral objection to eating it, just the same squeamishness that prevents me from eating snake. (This, from someone who has eaten and enjoyed squid, sea urchin, escargot, frogs' legs, etc.) It was a horrible tragedy about the little boy, and Disney should have posted warning signs.

It's easy to overlook that which does not validate our biases.

(2 posts)1. Gators are not endangered like gorillas.
2. It wasn't clear the gorilla would murder the child. If he had people would have been less upset if he was later euthanized.
3. Gorillas are mammals, more 'human-like' in appearance and intelligence. Gators are pea-brained eating machines who probably don't know what's happening to them.
Still, they had no choice once the gorilla started dragging the kid. Some female gorillas have been known to 'hand back' children to humans. But male gorillas are more aggressive.

So they were watching a movie and didn't see the child wander off? Where the heck was the movie being shown? At 9:00 it's pretty dark and must have been dark in that area for the hotel to be able to show a movie.
I feel for the parents, as I do for all parents who lose as child. And this was particularly horrendous. To see your child being dragged off crying for you. I can't imagine.
But I just don't understand how the child was not under the complete control of the parents, in the dark, around water.

(23,656 posts)Maybe not midnight dark, but dark enough. Still why would you not have your 2 yo child under constant surveillance?
They were at the pool to watch the movie, the water's edge is a good distance away.
Disney's Grand Floridian "Movies Under the Stars" schedule.
Movie starts at 8:30 pm near the beach pool"

(7,261 posts)They hold a 'drive in' movie every night there. Families are invited to sit in beach chairs or on the sand and watch a Disney feature.
I didn't realize that was the beach where the attack occurred. I also for sure didn't realize there were alligators in the GD water!!! The more I learn about this tragedy the madder I get at Disney.

Funny how selective hearing works.
