Can they still dump Trump at the convention? If not Trump, then who??

I keep hearing noises that there will be an anti-Trump uprising at the convention in Cleveland. With Trump's campaign manager out, one wonders if the ship is taking on too much water. My questions to my fellow DUers who care about such things:

1) Can he be dumped at this point, or have things gone too far with the presumptive nominee?
2) If not Trump, then who? For example, Mitt Romney's name comes up -- but he's an insider in a year in which conservative voters have shown no stomach for insiders? Ted Cruz? I think most in GOP land see that he's a sure loser in a national election? Kasich? Rubio? Both hard sells, given their poor primary showings. LeBron? I think he'd be wildly popular in Cleveland, and he's electable -- but is he even a Republican?

This is about encouraging the party to come to the polls and at least keep control of the House of Representatives.

Problem with that strategy is, their "base" is now Trump supporters. They still can't see how they created the monster in the first place.

Trump's fans will hate Ryan for delaying his endorsement of Trump and also for criticizing him even after endorsing him.

Sane people will hate Ryan for supporting Trump at all and for making it so clear that he puts party over country.

The GOP establishment will punish Ryan for not succeeding at the impossible balancing act they dragooned him into the speakership to accomplish.

The replacement will unite republicans, some indies, some minorities and anti-dem voters. The Trump nuts may not vote, but they are small in numbers, and will leave the RNC in revolt.

Rubio is courting the RNC for the position, tho Romney is involved

They get everything they want including the ability to blame Democrats for everything they do. Even if they lose control briefly they know they'll get it back in '18 and Hillary won't do anything to hurt the bottom line while they wait.

If it looks like she's getting elected, the Senate will do an about-face and confirm Garland on the theory that "it could be worse." The next President will likely get to replace RBG and Anthony Kennedy, with the possibility of replacing Clarence Thomas and Stephen Breyer.

If they do, then 2016 is a whole different ball game. I have to think that they are exploring options and picking their timing.

“We’re engaged to Trump, but we’re not married,” Day said. “If you found out your fiance was a habitual liar, adulterer and owns casinos and an escort service, you may not want to get married at that point. We want to give people a chance to not get married to Donald Trump.”

12. If Trump is dumped, Hillary is in trouble
Mon Jun 20, 2016, 01:28 PM
Jun 2016

. . depending on who they pick. If it is Romney or (gasp) Jeb, it is gut check time.

My rationale:

1) Although there will be an initial outcry from the Trump supporters, they will come home.

2) Hillary's unfavorables. Election 101.

The timing is everything. There will be a slump when Trump is dumped, followed by a peak as the voters come home, and new supporters come on in to kick the tires. If this peak comes too close to the election for the Hillary campaign to adjust, another adverse indicator.

Best thing we can be doing now to help Hillary to victory . . . support Trump.

His supporters aren't garden variety Republicans. They hate Bush, Rubio, Romney, et al and see them as RINOs... Go to any right wing site. Trumpists hate Republicans as much as Democrats because they believe the former are traitors who betrayed them.

There will be fist fights on the Convention floor if they try to steal the nomination from Trump...

16. The mechanism to replace him is in place: Rule 40(b) of the Republican Party.
Mon Jun 20, 2016, 01:43 PM

The mechanism to replace him is in place: Rule 40(b) of the Rules of the Republican Party-- a series of official guidelines that govern the inner workings of the Republican National Committee. The purpose of Rule 40(b) has always been to function as a culling mechanism. It limits the number of candidates who can formally be featured on the nominating ballot for the Republication nomination for president at the convention.

This rule, as with all, may be removed, adopted with it modifications, or adopted unchanged before the nominating ballot is officially set in stone at the beginning of the convention. If adopted unchanged, it could prevent some candidates (such as John Kasich) and potential candidates (such as Paul Ryan or Mitt Romney) from having their name placed on the nominating ballot at the convention and thereby prevent their chances of becoming the Republican nominee.

Trump won the primaries handily. Dumping him would raise a firestorm in Cleveland.
Anyways, the GOP made the bed. Now they should lay in it.

Let's say Cleveland comes and the GOP tells everyone "JK - it's not going to be Trump - we're putting up Mitt Romney" - then he'd almost be a fool not to run as an Indie, given the number of outraged supporters he'd have at that point.

Seriously - I agree. It's be one thing if there were a close runner up (like Clinton and Sanders), but no one else was even close to Trump on their side in the primaries.
