Perry: Obama cares more about politics than U.S. troops
Urbandale, Iowa (CNN) Texas Gov. Rick Perry accused Barack Obama of caring more about politics than American troops on Wednesday, blasting the president for not planning a major parade to welcome home soldiers from the war in Iraq.
The last combat troops left the country last week, after nearly nine years of fighting.
This president wouldnt welcome home our many heroes with a simple parade in their honor, the Republican presidential candidate told a packed house at The Machine Shed restaurant in Urbandale.
Maybe its because this war isnt popular with the Democrats, I dont know," said Perry, who has tacked to the right in a final campaign push before next Tuesday's Iowa caucuses. "But Mr. President, our soldiers come first. It comes before party politics. We need to welcome our soldiers home. Give them that parade. Give them that pat on the back.

(3,517 posts)President Obama signed legislation that provides significant tax credits to businesses that hire unemployed and disabled veterans, the only measure in the presidents larger jobs proposal to receive any bipartisan support.
In a signing ceremony in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, Obama offered rare praise to a Congress he has otherwise chastised for months over failure to take significant action on the nations struggling economy.

The bigger problem is that we have people on DU complaining about lack of respect for Democratic elected officials. The other side used "respect" as a rhetorical bludgeon to silence respect and to elevate elected Republicans to a position above those they were supposed to represent. I hate to see our side doing the same thing.

(24,452 posts)I know that we are supposed to honor our military men and women and their sacrifice for this country but, frankly, given the circumstances of our "involvement" in Iraq and the fact that 4-5K soldiers (and countless Iraqis) died needlessly over there in the Bush/GOP "war of choice", getting them out of there was actually the best possible way to honor them IMHO. And no, this "war" with Iraq was never that popular with Democrats-though President Obama was one of the very small number of elected officials to publicly speak out against it (one of the reasons I ultimately supported him over Hillary).

Seems like 'all' the GOP candidates should already know that tidbit of info considering they are currently in campaign mode - LOL

(9,974 posts)Dumb shit.
He needs to go after the Pentagon, then, not POTUS. It was explained on TV last night that NYC had asked the Pentagon about planning a parade and the Pentagon punted it back to NYC for a decision on whether or not to have the parade down the Avenue of Heroes.
Then comes the other issue..we are STILL at war, our troops are STILL over in Afghanistan getting killed.
Perry is grasping at straws. Had POTUS made a decision to hold a parade, goodhair would be bitching about that.
Goodhair, just head back down here to TX, we are tired of seeing how much of our TX taxes are being used to fund your prancing around the country. I cannot wait until the day that he has to give his post-primary "heading back to TX with my tail between my legs" speech.

The Rachel discussed this last night. The take away, Pentagon is not involved and it's totally up to which ever city to host/pay for it.

(2,381 posts)I'd bet there are a lot of vets who will be returning to Texas in the next few weeks -- we've got military bases galore, including Fort Hood, one of the biggies. Perhaps the governor can exercise some of his own executive power to give them a rousing welcome home.
And if not, maybe he should consider shutting up.

(4,723 posts)Tell ya what, Ricky, how about better jobs for the returning (and all the other) vets? How about better medical care, better attention to their housing needs? I'm sure in your lust to dismantle the government, your plan would be to cut vet services to even more inadequate levels.
I think when he says "parade," he means "jingoistic propeganda show." I doubt the parade he has in mind would be all that much about the vets, but rather it would be to keep the American people ratcheted up and turned on to the poisonous RW.

who knows or cares for Texas in any way, shape or form knows this sort of thing already, and in gruesome detail. When this no-good snake oil salesman started his "campaign" you might recall how a bunch of folks from Texas spoke up and spoke out about the bill of goods that Perry was trying to foist on voters who didn't know any better at the time. A lot of the Texans who did speak up were called everything from alarmist to liars. I'm glad these folks who know this low-life no good best are finding some degree of vindication. And for those of you who are remotely disappointing, take heart. This piece of "work" will be back in four years time, more polished and better educated, with new bottles and labels for the same old snake oil. and all the while, he'll claim that 2011 and 2012 didn't happen the way everyone knows they have for him.
