(50,557 posts)But when the time comes to name a ship for Bill Clinton, I'd like it to be a Lewis and Clark class supply ship--something that is usable in both war and peace, just like Clinton was.

(135,425 posts)Jimmy Carter has a sub named after him, and they are going to name a vessel after Gabby Giffords as well.

(50,557 posts)USS Ronald Reagan, an aircraft carrier (CVN-76)
USS George H.W. Bush, another aircraft carrier (CVN-77)
And if you've been here long enough, you might remember my post on the USS George W. Bush. In it, the Navy decided to rechristen an existing ship for Shrub because they could not afford to build a new one. They asked the fleet to choose a ship, and a sailor suggested rechristening the USS Oriskany to honor Dubya. The Oriskany had been scuttled for use as an artificial reef three years before I wrote the post, and the sailor knew that.

(2,307 posts)but, I thought we didn't name them after living persons so that if they are sunk you save the embarrassment.

(21,786 posts)Even the Royal Navy doesn't name ships after a reigning monarch (one of the aircraft carriers currently under construction will be HMS Queen Elizabeth, but she's named after Elizabeth I).

(44,173 posts)No more naming things after segregationist senators.
Just rename old ships, no need for new ones.

(21,653 posts)He should have a hot-air balloon loaded with U.S. jobs headed off shore named after him.

(20,136 posts)we should start naming more things after Dems and liberals.
Bring on the USS Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter National Airport, and whatever else you can think of.

(24,853 posts)So you're all about wasting tax dollars because you want a warship named after a guy who put cigars into a young lady's vagina in the Oval Office?
Fuck yeah... I'm all OVER that! THEY do it, right? Only fair that WE do it too!
And on the day I was born... someone owned property that should have been OURS, ALL of ours... Just think about that.

(4,760 posts)personally I think ships should be named after fish. The USS Walleye has a nice sound to it.

(2,952 posts)Commonly called the "sturgeon" class, was the last Group Of subs to be named after fish, although 3 were named for people. They were built in the mid 60's thru the mid 70's. The 688's(Los Angeles class) and the Ohio class adopted the cities and states monikers(the missile subs are named for states)from WWII cruisers and battleships...cruisers and destroyers are now named for battles and people, like carriers in WWII used to Be named after....it's very confusing....I served on the USS Woodrow Wilson, a converted missile sub....SSBN 624 to SSN 624....we lovingly called her the "woodfish" because of the SSN tab....

(34,179 posts)A cargo ship that carries our jobs to Asia, and ships back shitty goods for the return trip would be highly appropriate in my opinion.

(30,247 posts)Bill deserves it far more than Bush.
Although, he and Hillary now have an airport named after them. The airport in Little Rock, AR was renamed the Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport (soon to be international). That's the only airport named for a woman (other than a small regional airport in KS named for Amelia Earhart).

(1,004 posts)Maybe he would have already had some other ship in the Navy fleet named for him, but I have no doubt that his role as a Naval aviator in WWII directly impacted the decision to give him the highest-profile namesake.
He was in the Navy for basically the entire war and fairly highly decorated. So I'm not sure using him as a precedent for Clinton in this matter is very fair.

Especially those whose policies helped get us into the messes we are currently dealing with (telecomm dereg anyone?)
