(CNN)At least 30 people were treated for minor burns after walking on hot coals during self-help guru Tony Robbins' "Unleash the Power Within" seminar in Dallas,Texas, fire and medical officials said.
According to Robbins' website, the "fire walk" is intended to help people conquer their fears by walking across hot coals. It takes place during the "Turn Fear Into Power" portion of the event.
"Walking over those hot coals is a symbolic experience that proves if you can make it through the fire, you can make it through anything," his website says.
Of the more than 7,000 participants, at least 30 sustained minor burns to their feet and five were hospitalized, according to Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman Jason Evans.

(26,355 posts)For one thing, you have to set up the bed of coals correctly - start with wood, set your fire, let it burn down to the charcoal stage, spread it out, and let it burn down a bit, so there's a relatively cool layer on the top of the coals. "Cool" is a relative term - it's still really hot, but because embers actually don't conduct heat very well, if they're not too hot, your skin can be in contact with them for a fraction of a second without getting burned.
Another thing, you have to walk correctly - a steady, not too slow, not too fast stride, where you stretch out your toes and land your foot flat on each step, so it doesn't sink down into the hot layer of coals under the cool layer and burn the shit out of your foot, and doesn't leave bits of hot coals stuck between your toes (OW!) And you don't want to do the hot-foot jog through the coals - you'll be landing on the balls of your feet, which will plunge down into the really hot layer of coals, and burn the shit out of your feet.
Do it wrong, and it will hurt a lot. Just ask Tony Robbins's dissatisfied customers...
