I grew up poor...really poor. we benefited government housing, food stamps, Government Cheese, free school lunch, section 8, food bank, our church, free used winter coats, etc...I was a kid and just lived through it all always just making the best of what I had instead of what I didn't. We hardly ever went out to eat or went on trips, or had "stuff".
Flash forward...
I hardly ever go out to eat, go on trips or have stuff...I make a good wage (above the national average). But I am a slave to Student Loans, Health Insurance premiums, car payment, rent, poor credit rating (foreclosure), etc...
I work and have worked more hours than most people. My type of schedule and line of work prevents me from obtaining a second job. My life is better in a lot of ways than when was a kid. But in a lot of ways it's just the same...except I flip the bill for it all instead the rest of you.
Not complaining...just kind of hit me in the face over the weekend when one of the kids said they wanted to go to Six Flags this summer - they've never been. Hell I'd been to Six Flags a few times by the time I was their age and we were dirt poor. Today I am middle class! But I can't afford Six Flags for my family. Ah...the American Dream.

(6,206 posts)Similar situation...have health, home and care insurance thank goodness. However, can't afford a trip to Disneyland. Luckily in the middle class though that could change.
I am now retired for health reasons.

(47,675 posts)We used to get season passes to Hershey Park. It was far more economical than one-day tickets. We'd go during the week and the least busy hours and just leave when we felt like it. The Halloween and Christmas events used to be free (pay as you go or armband), but a few years ago they started charging $18 just to walk through the door!!! That's when I gave it up. My wife and I haven't been back but the kids have gone a few times. It's just too damn expensive, too hot, there aren't enough water fountains (so you'll buy expensive bottled water from the NUMEROUS vending machines), and the lines were too long even when we DID go.
