Judge Aaron Persky made headlines for all the wrong reasons last month after he sentenced Stanford rapist Brock Turner to probation and a pathetic six months in county jail for raping an unconscious woman. Now he's making headlines again for sentencing Raul Ramirez, a 32-year-old immigrant from El Salvador who sexually assaulted his female roommate in a case very similar to Turner's, to three years in state prison.

(2,550 posts)I'm not defending the first case, but this second one is a plea deal with admitted guilt.

(2,550 posts)The judge doesn't have to accept it, but they usually do.
The defendant agreed with the prosecutor on 3 years. I would assume because of the light sentence the previous guy got that he knew he'd get harsher, especially since admitting guilt.
There's no gray area in this one, so he plead out.

Thanks

(2,550 posts)But he admitted guilt.
If he goes to trial and wastes resources, he'll get longer than 3.
The article says 3 years is common, if he went to trial he'd likely get more.

(1,054 posts)Stlll, it seems like the actual crime was pretty similar. What I don't get is that the guy who WENT to trial got less, if I understand correctly, instead of more. Still seems like this judge treated the two much more differently than the circumstances of the crime would have called for.
