Report: Michigan Judge Who Locked up 3 Kids Committed Misconduct
DETROIT (AP) -- A suburban Detroit judge committed several acts of misconduct when she sent three siblings to juvenile detention and made references to Charles Manson's cult during a rancorous custody case, according to a report released Friday.
Retired Judge Daniel Ryan sharply criticized Oakland County Judge Lisa Gorcyca, who said she locked up the children for not having lunch with their estranged dad only as a last resort. Ryan was appointed as a special master in the ethics case.
Gorcyca said she had warned the kids - 15, 10 and 9 - that a finding of contempt was a "tool" in her "toolbox" if they didn't have contact with their father.
Ryan said there's nothing wrong with a judge using "stern language" in contentious cases, but he believes Gorcyca went too far.
