At A Time Like This, Is There Anyone We Need Less Than Rudy Giuliani?

Former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, whose tenure was marred by law enforcement killings of unarmed African-Americans, took to the national television circuit today to baselessly smear Black Lives Matter protesters as responsible for the killing of five police officers in Dallas.

The Donald Trump surrogate and hardline neoconservative told MSNBC’s Brian Williams, “Police officers in this country feel they have a target on their back. They’ve felt that way for over a year now.”

“And I think the reason there’s a target on police officers’ backs is because of groups like Black Lives Matter that make it seem like all police are against blacks,” Giuliani continued. “They’re not. They’re the ones saving black lives. Black Lives Matter are not saving black lives. It’s the police officers doing it.” In fact, police killings of Black people in 2015 outnumbered lynchings of African-Americans during the worst year of Jim Crow, as verified by Quartz reporter Annalisa Merelli.

Giuliani’s remarks come despite the fact that there has been no proven tie between the Dallas shooting and the Black Lives Matter protesters, who gathered to condemn the back-to-back police killings of African-American men Alton Sterling and Philando Castile.

The idea of Rudy Giuliani as "America's Mayor" was based on his leadership, such as it was, on 9/11/01 and the following weeks. Yet, if he had done his job as New York's mayor, many of the problems on that day wouldn't have happened.

Here are two examples. First, despite the previous bombing of the World Trade Center by bin Laden's followers and despite the recommendations of security professionals, Mr. Giuliani insisted on putting the city's emergency offices in the World Trade Center! They should have been somewhere safe and secure and removed from the target area.

Second, had he done his job as mayor, the emergency services would have had the ability to communicate not only on that day but everyday. The police and firefighters were using different radios whose frequencies were incompatible! This was a failure of his management that resulted in the deaths of many brave people on 9/11. It's also an example of his inability to "herd the cats" of a diverse government and city.

As far as "cleaning up" the city, there are two other points to consider. First, the economic boom that swept the country during his mayoralty was due, in large part, to the economic policies of the Clinton Administration. Mr. Giuliani was a lucky recipient of those good times which encouraged developers and entrepreneurs to build lots of new businesses in the city. Times Square had devolved into a filthy pit and it was going to change no matter who was mayor. There was no way that Disney or many other corporations would move there unless it was cleaned up. In other words, Mr. Giuliani was not the driver of those changes to NYC.

Second, he "cleaned up" the city by empowering his police force and other agencies to push the envelope on the treatment of minorities and the homeless. There are many, many cases of abuse by the NYPD and the Giuliani Administration during that time. Amadou Diallo is the first that comes to mind and there were many other examples.

I understand that you're not praising him, yeoman6987. It's just that every time he gets quoted my skin crawls. He is a despot, a bigot and his attempt to remain in office when his term-limited tenure was over demonstrated his contempt for constitutional democracy.

it helps to have him visibly denying reality and objecting to common sense.

At least he has moments of lucidity and his career doesn't revolve around one single event
Guliani spends his entire time talking about how he was Mayor of NY on 9/11
He reminds me of Al Bundy talking about his 4 touchdowns in one high school football game
Only Al was more entertaining

The NYC Mayor that:

1.) Tried to take credit for NYC's drop in crime rate during his tenure, but was actually started by Democratic Mayor David Dinkins?

Dinkins hired 7000 more NYC police officers during his tenure and in the last 2 years of Dinkins' tenure, crime was already falling. Giuliani just benefitted from the actions that were taken by Dinkins.

2.) Married his second cousin, as his first wife.

He claimed he didn't know she was related to him until they were divorced. Her brother says otherwise.

3.) Cheated on his first wife, and ended up marrying his mistress, as his second wife after his divorce from his first wife.

4.) Cheated on his second wife, and ended up marrying his mistress, as his third wife after his divorce from his second wife.

The affair happened while he was NYC mayor and he used his NYC security detail to help him obscure it.

Yay, Rudy. Nice, family values guy.

No wonder he gets along so well with Drumpf.

there could be many, many more, but those are the worst I can think of, even though some of them haven't been heard from for awhile. forever wouldn't be long enough, though. the list excludes media creeps; if it didn't, I'd be typing til Wednesday.
