Ironically, conservatives are fracturing the Republican Party.

In hopes that they will live to fight another day, the conservatives in the Republican Party are leaving Donald Trump to fight the battle alone. It's a gamble.

If Trump wins, the Republican Party will have changed and will be very difficult to re-assemble. If Trump loses, the conservatives in the Party will say, "I told you so". They will then attempt to put the old conservative coalition back together.

However, the fracture may be so deep that it will be very difficult, if not impossible, to do. Enemies are made during battles such as these. And, as we know, elephants have very long memories...
