is this 2016 this century's 1964?

trump isn't exactly a goldwater in many ways, but they are both seen, reasonably enough, as dangerously extreme.

enough to scare the crap out of people, and, hopefully, enough to give democrats a solid win.

moreover, though, the social backdrop is, finally, showing progress. gay rights have improved markedly over the last decade and the media and washington are slowly waking up to the fact that racism is not remotely behind us. we're not yet at our 1968, but we're headed in that direction.

the parties (particularly the republican party) are under stress and may very well be headed toward a major realignment, as nixon took the bigots into the republican fold after lbj alienated them with the passage of civil rights legislation.

hillary is not likely to be able to advance seriously controversial legislation with a republican house, but that will only increase the public demonstrations and pressure. our 1968 might not come four years later, it might take until the next census. but i think there are definite parallels and we're headed for some very significant changes.

mostly for the good, though not without violence i fear.
