Cleveland extra-curricular police killing, not a cause célèbre

An appeals court on Monday ruled that a jury should decide whether two Cleveland police officers violated the rights of a man shot and killed in suburban Parma during an investigation over stolen jewelry from one of the officers' house.

A three-judge panel from the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that there is enough evidence for a lawsuit brought by the family of Dan Ficker, who was shot and killed by officer Matthew Craska during a July 4, 2011 confrontation, to proceed. ....

David Mindek, who was off duty, and Craska, who was on, went to Ficker's home to talk to him. A struggle ensued, and Craska attempted to arrest Ficker on an assault on a police officer charge. The struggled ended with Craska shooting Ficker in the chest. ....
