Republican negativity

It isn't new. Don't forget Nixon's campaign in 1968, the McCarthy years, etc.

Does science offer any clues?

1. People right-of-center politically spend more time looking at unpleasant images, and people left-of-center politically spend more time looking at pleasant images.

2. People who react strongly to disgusting images, such as a picture of someone eating worms, are more likely to self-identify as conservative.

3. Conservatives and liberals react similarly to positive incentives, but conservatives have greater sensitivity to negative stimuli.

4. Conservatism is focused on preventing negative outcomes, while liberalism is focused on advancing positive outcomes.

5. Conservatives learn better from negative stimuli than from positive stimuli and are more risk avoidant than liberals.

6. Individual political attitudes correlate with physiological traits, such as sensitivity to sudden noises and threatening visual images. Conservatives are more sensitive to them.

... that Trump is a powerful "negative stimuli" for me, though!

It's probably not a bad idea for Hillary and others to keep pointing out his negative qualities. MAYBE they can pick up some conservative votes that way, similar to how Reagan won over many Democrats in 1980 with his "optimistic" views.

And thanks for your post,Buckeye_Democrat .

From Ohio I'm guessing. I spent some time there volunteering for Kerry in Columbus once upon a time.

Ohio looks close in the polls (ugh!), and I'll definitely be voting for Clinton!

Trump is a dangerous megalomaniac and a moron.

... they've got a political advantage is some ways because the people at the top who want no government regulation or taxes can easily focus on negatives about the government and liberals, even if it's often innuendo.

Our legal system makes it about impossible for politicians to sue anyone for defamation of character too.

If a corporation or private citizen was accused of some of the wrong-doing that gets flung at government, they can more easily sue.

I wonder if "Suing Donny" realizes that?

... with all of the fear-mongering about him supposedly allowing Communist threats to go unopposed reminds me of a long series of such nonsense in this country.

It goes back to at least the time of Senator McCarthy (probably much earlier).

Now we have the INSANE accusation that Obama founded ISIS, with some Republicans eating it up!

This leads me to ponder the following: Suppose that the USA remained unchanged, but the rest of the world was magically transformed into a peaceful utopia -- nothing but Gandhi-like people living in harmony and destroying their weaponry. (No, I don't actually think this will happen!)

My conjecture is that Republicans would STILL squawk incessantly about enemies that posed a "dire threat" to us! I'm not sure how they would do it, but they would do it!
