Trump is a draft dodger.

(2,900 posts)a war well worth avoiding. And unlike Bush, he doesn't pretend that he served honorably in the highly intoxicated, er I mean decorated, Texas Air National Guard.

(53,339 posts)It avoids disparaging those who avoided the draft for reasons of conscience. As we know, that's something Trump does not possess.
The Second Stone
(2,900 posts)I don't blame people who avoided Vietnam because they were afraid. It was a stupid war fought for the reason that we were afraid of debating why we were fighting it.

(2,322 posts)Is that it's a pretty loose term. I think we need to specify the details of this "dodge." Here are the facts from Politifact.com:
The 2-S classifications are Trumps student deferments. The first two covered his time at Fordham University in the Bronx, and the second two allowed him to stay in school when he transferred to study business at the University of Pennsylvania.
At the time, as Tigar wrote in his 1969 article, any college student who asked could get a student deferment. When he graduated in 1968, Trumps classification shifted to 1-A, or "available for service."
Had that stood, Trump would have been drafted.
But Trump had a physical exam in September 1968. He had taken one less than two years earlier that did not disqualify him for service as we can tell from his 1-A classification in July 1968. However, his second physical was followed in October with a new classification, 1-Y. That designation put him near the bottom of any call-up list. It meant he would only be drafted if there were a national emergency.
Until recently, the only detail on record about that shift was it was medically related. After his comments about McCain, Trump said it had to do with bone spurs in his heels. Trump reportedly was active in college sports, playing baseball, tennis and squash.
That's all the facts we know. His story certainly isn't uncommon for those trying to skip out of 'nam in that time. Including Bill Clinton. And no one has ever spoken up to anything illegal in his deferment. But anyone who didn't go to war (and even with that medial issue, Trump could have volunteered) shouldn't be criticizing those who did while running for the job of Commander in Chief--meaning his remarks on McCain. Such a person also shouldn't be postulating that he's some kind of General Patton because he's a tough business leader.
Now to be fair, Hillary gets a kinda unfair pass on the question of being brave soldier. Women weren't given the chance to be drafted or dodge Vietnam--though likely her poor eyesight would have deferred her. But a Secretary of State who was in the war room when Bin Laden was taken out...I suspect you and other vets would judge that as giving her a tad more military experience than Trump and his time in a military prep school.

My father was awarded a field commission to Warrant Officer in Italy. He was also awarded a Purple Heart when he and a buddy found themselves in a mine field. My father carried the shrapnel in his body until he died in 2003. His buddy never left the field.
My brother also enlisted in the Army in 1968.

(2,199 posts)You are a weak, small-minded loser that has no honor. This Army combat veteran, six years enlisted, 32 years officer from 1977-2015, Korea, Germany, Afghanistan and multiple state-side assignments finds you ignorant and without morals. You spew hate, violence and intolerance. I have shared meals, water, ammo, socks, humanity, sympathy with my fellow Soldiers from all walks of live, rich/poor, Christian, Muslim,Jew, Hindu across the board. Thank God I am now retired and will not have to serve under you as the Commander in Chief if our nation were so unlucky as to elect you for anything. You are a Disgrace Mr. Trump!
