This is quite a bit different from the usual online tests rating your liberal or conservativeness. Instead of asking "Do you support abortion rights" or "I support tax cuts to stimulate the economy", this asks correlation questions. It is impossible to know whether an answer is one that a conservative would go with or a liberal. It is based on the answer that someone that is typically liberal would give or typically conservative would give. For example, just making up a question, it might say "I enjoy spicy food" and if 90% of liberals say true and 10% of conservatives say true, then if you say "true" it is correlating that you are somehow like a typical liberal voter. It might sound like bullshit but there is a lot of research and science behind this type of personality based assessment.
Might results 62% Liberal and 38% Conservative

(38,311 posts)A good person does whatever needs to be done and disgust always gets in the way of that.
There are things that make me feel a little yucky but I'm not sure I've ever felt disgust about anything concerning our physical nature as human beings. I was changing diapers as a ten year old kid. No big deal. Some diapers are really yucky.
I used to work with transplant techs. Occasionally I was the guy carrying body parts like eyes or skin or bone in the Igloo cooler. These medical techs were some of the sweetest people I've ever met. They chop up dead people to save and improve the lives of people still living.
But yes, the sense of humor of transplant techs, in conversations with other medical people, tended to be a little dark, even ghoulish.
I think "disgust" is a useless fiction. I feel the same about punishment. These are fictional emotions, it must be hard work to raise a kid to accept these fictional emotions as any kind of reality.
I was fortunate to be a somewhat feral child. I never learned how to be disgusted or how to be punished. I can't be disgusted, and I can't be punished.
Learned disgust and learning acceptance of punishment are key features of the fascist mindset.

I actually figured it would label me conservative since that was how I was brought up and hence a lot of the underlying substrata-level stuff is still resident. But apparently my native disgust (or lack thereof) is enough to overwrite even that early brainwashing, muhahahaha!
Alternately, disgust reactions aren't related to early childhood teaching at all...but that seems kind of off to me? Hrm. Maybe I'll look more into this, because now I'm genuinely curious.

(6,496 posts)The general theme is that liberals have lower level of disgust. I don't think that is always true, but maybe it usually is. I know from my own experience that disgust is heightened by pregnancy. I think pregnant women would be hard to read with this test.
Avalux
(35,015 posts)Alternatively, I think I have a lower level of disgust partly because I a medical professional. But maybe I wouldn't be a medical professional if I didn't have a lower level of disgust? Chicken or egg scenario.
Pregnant women though - that's a temporary condition and wouldn't be accurate.

The study measured participants' brain response to "disgusting" imagery using an MRI. The study could predict party affiliation with up to 98% confidence. The questionaire on chartsme.com uses Jonathan Haidt's disgust scale in lieu of MRI and imagery, so results are likely far less accurate. Watch TED Talk to learn more or read "Yuck!: The Nature and Moral Significance of Disgust".

(7,528 posts)that conservatives tend to frame what they consider "bad" issues in the same terms as "germs" and "disease" and "infection"...invasive, viral, and predatory, and this invokes and plays on the natural squeamishness some people carry.
I've always held the philosophy that liberalism embraces the politics of inclusion, and conservatism endorses the politics of exclusion.
Liberals want to talk with their enemies and find common ground. Conservatives want to build a wall to keep out those who disagree.
This test then sort of makes sense. If lots of things tend to squick one out and make them turn away, they tend to exclude the situation from consciousness. If a situation does not cause discomfort, one is more likely to go in and assist and remedy or understand the situation. It's sort of how each political philosophy works.
pangaia

It's based on a disgust response. I disagree with their stance that someone who is easily disgusted is more likely to be conservative.
Ahh - a little investigation shows that this is being extrapolated to simulate the moral repugnance that conservatives are more likely to engage in.
I would say there is a big difference between being disgusted with contaminated food and disgusted by other people's moral standards.

Most important, though, I am a socialist somewhat to the left of Bernie! True, conservatives do tend to see politics in terms of contamination of the "pure" society, but that is far too complex an aspect to be dealt with by checking whether maggots in rotten mat strike you as disgusting. Even Democrats have a "Ewwww! Gross!" response to such things--if they are normal.
