Ghazala Khan Wash. Post Op/Ed: "Trump criticized my silence. He knows nothing about true sacrifice."

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/ghazala-khan-donald-trump-criticized-my-silence-he-knows-nothing-about-true-sacrifice/2016/07/31/c46e52ec-571c-11e6-831d-0324760ca856_story.html?tid=sm_fb

Ghazala Khan: Trump criticized my silence. He knows nothing about true sacrifice.

By Ghazala Khan OpinionsJuly 31 at 9:45 AM

Ghazala Khan’s son, U.S. Army Capt. Humayun Khan, was killed in Iraq in 2004.

CHARLOTTESVILLE

Donald Trump has asked why I did not speak at the Democratic convention. He said he would like to hear from me. Here is my answer to Donald Trump: Because without saying a thing, all the world, all America, felt my pain. I am a Gold Star mother. Whoever saw me felt me in their heart.

- snip -

The last time I spoke to my son was on Mother’s Day 2004. We had asked him to call us collect whenever he could. I begged him to be safe. I asked him to stay back, and not to go running around trying to become a hero, because I knew he would do something like that.

He said, “Mom, these are my soldiers, these are my people. I have to take care of them.” He was killed by a car bomber outside the gates of his base. He died trying to save his soldiers and innocent civilians.

- snip -

When Donald Trump is talking about Islam, he is ignorant. If he studied the real Islam and Koran, all the ideas he gets from terrorists would change, because terrorism is a different religion.

Donald Trump said he has made a lot of sacrifices. He doesn’t know what the word sacrifice means.

None of his supporters saw the dnc speech or any part of it. Fox didn't cover it. His supporters wouldnt google it.

They only hear his sound bite rants and don't know the back story. They are hatefully ignorant.

We are fighting a traditional fight. He is not.

I'm just glad to see how that point is being brought out. Time was, no one would even have mentioned this.

cardinal rule of politics: when you find yourself in a hole, stop digging. Trump chose to attack a Gold Star mother. And now his supporters have no choice but to handle the massive cognitive dissonance his obstinacy produces.

Trump lives for the hate. It allows him to own the news cycle and take attention off the Clinton campaign.

He is trying to suck the air out of the room. And the media is helping him.

This trade has all but stopped the positive messages from the dnc, and has pushed the bus tour stops off the map.

He is doing exactly what he wants to. He sees it as working, And he might be right. Hopefully it will all crash down on him, but so far it hasn't.

that will have to be resolved. Whereas before, his supporters could say without missing a beat that they supported him because he "speaks his mind," they now must balance that questionable positive against "He attacks Gold Star mothers."

What you see as digging, his supporters see as assertiveness and 'telling it like it is'.

People do crazy things. They otherize and vote against their own interests and rationalize and make excuses. But I guarantee you, any woman who has ever borne and loved a child has felt something for Ghazala Khan these last few days. And somewhere in there they can't figure out how Trump can do what he's doing in response.

Every mother grieved while watching the Khans appearance at the Democratic Convention. EVERY mother was touched. I don't think you can be a mother and NOT be touched by that. (Well, unless you're an abuser or a broken individual or otherwise sick inside, yourself, that is.) Every time I see a replay of that clip of them at the convention and her husband doing the talking, and when they were both on Lawrence O'Donnell's show Friday night - when she did speak, several times - I get choked up. Just can't help it.

It was a RW email that made the rounds when she was a senator.

It was, of course, phony, and slapped the name of a WW2 hero onto it just to give it more fraudulent outrage factor.

The truth of the matter is that the GS mothers dropped by her office while they were in Washington, unplanned and without an appointment, when she wasn't there (and IIRC wasn't in town).

Some anonymous Wingnut spun that into her deliberately spurning them. And tacked the name of the first WW2 Hellcat ace, Hamilton McWorter, onto it to drive the meme among its intended audience. McWorter was mystified as to how or why his name got attached.

Now Trump is doing it for real. Anyone know what the Wingnut email circle jerks are saying?

She did what I would do: Stand there and be strong for my husband, our family, and that soldier's friends, and try not to break into hysterical sobs.

I don't know how she did it. I would have been a pile of drivel. I admired her courage on international television.
