I see this sign all the time when I drive up and down and down the Concord Pike (rt 202) here in Wilmington. Lately the sign has been vandalized and the Church has done something incredibly awesome to let the vandals know they aren't going to back down.

Church responds to Black Lives Matter vandals with dollars
A "Black Lives Matter" banner outside a Talleyville church along Concord Pike has been vandalized again but now, the church is responding with dollars.
In new signs posted alongside the banner Wednesday, church officials with the First Unitarian Church of Wilmington warn vandals that for every time the bright yellow and black banner is cut or destroyed, members will make a donation to Black Lives Matter UU.
"We want to make this even more costly to you (the vandals)," said the Rev. Roberta Finkelstein. "Every time you do this, you're actually making a donation to the cause."

(14,487 posts)I went to The Liberal Store at www.evolvefish.com and had a custom bumper sticker made that said "Steal My Sticker and I'll Donate Again." They did a GREAT job with it - they chose the font for me and put the Obama logo in the middle. No one ever stole that sticker!!! LOL

(13,871 posts)A barbeque joint was forced by court action to serve black patrons. The bastard put a sign on the front door that said: "N******s, the court says I have to serve you, but every dollar you spend will be donated to the KKK."
The sign came down a month or so later, reportedly because he was seeing a decline in business from his white customers.
One of the signs was used a few years ago at the SC State Museum in a display about the civil rights movement in SC. There were two letters to the editor complaining about the racist word on the sign, but the museum said they did not think it wise to cover up how badly some of their fellow citizens behaved during that time.

(51 posts)I wonder if the folks who complained were sensible white folks who were offended by the language because it reminded them of a not-too-distant past where that overt racism wasn't all too uncommon.
I wasn't going to write that sentence, until I realized I was making myself uncomfortable worrying that someone would be offended by me stereotyping someone by race. Jeez. Makes me wonder how long it'll take before future generations can look back on that era and just really not understand how it could be considered so normal at the time. We're too close to it these days, but someday, maybe, it'll be one of those weird historical oddities folks just won't be able to truly understand the same way we do.

(78,249 posts)It's the closest I've ever come to a belief system I can deal with. Alas, here in San Jose, I kept striking out at social hour. Hence, a lapsed UU -- the very end of the religious road, where it turns into a couple of muddy ruts.

I too am a somewhat lapsed UU, on the brink of returning in a less than full time manner. One reason is at age 61 it seems many in my former social circles don't seem to be very engaged anymore. I like the idea of an intentional community that shares my values.

Donations and checks to help support the banner and Black Lives Matter movement should be made out to First Unitarian Church of Wilmington, with "BLM Banner" on the memo line. The church is located at 730 Halstead Road in Talleyville.
Zip is 19803, according to their web page...
