Can't help hearing what was said today.

The mental pictures are still too damned vivid, and chillingly so. High school and college memories shouldn’t include the assassinations of JFK and Bobby and Dr. King, but there they are. There was the murder of Malcolm X, the shooting of George Wallace, the blessedly failed attempts against Gerald Ford, the near-assassination of Reagan. With the election of Barack Obama, threats against the President and his family multiplied exponentially and have continued apace.

And Donald Trump says his remark about the 2nd Amendment was a joke, that the clumsily veiled suggestion to murder Hillary Clinton was a joke. Well, too many memories don’t let us hear any joking in those remarks. But what is evoked is yet one more memory — that Charles Manson didn’t kill anyone, either.
