Thomas Friedman on Donald Trump's threats

A great column detailing how dangerous this man is:

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/10/opinion/trumps-ambiguous-wink-wink-to-second-amendment-people.html?action=click&pgtype=Homepage&clickSource=story-heading&module=opinion-c-col-left-region®ion=opinion-c-col-left-region&WT.nav=opinion-c-col-left-region

People are playing with fire here, and there is no bigger flamethrower than Donald Trump. Forget politics; he is a disgusting human being. His children should be ashamed of him. I only pray that he is not simply defeated, but that he loses all 50 states so that the message goes out across the land — unambiguously, loud and clear: The likes of you should never come this way again.

I can't even remember the number of times I have heard people in my little town refer to Obama as a nigger and say that he and Hillary need to be killed. Of course all the spics and ragheads need to be killed or deported too. And to cap it off one even says that FDR should have never fought the nazis because Japan attacked us, not Germany. Not even kidding a little bit here. A lot a our country men hate America if it allows people who are not white males to have a meaningful voice. We may soon have to have a do over on the civil war. These people are ignorant and driven to violence. Do not under estimate their capacity for acting out. I strongly suggest you take measures to protect yourselves no matter what the election brings. Good luck to you all. I hope I am wearing a tin foil hat but it feels like an end of an age here.

Remember Bill O'Reilly and "Tiller the baby killer"? He was shot dead in church by an unhinged anti-abortionist who believed he should kill the doctor. O'Reilly kept urging it on with his repeated segments on the doctor and his catch phrase "Tiller the baby killer."

If this whole campaign has been performance art for the sake of puffing Mr Trump's ego, then winning or losing the election (if he ever even stands for it, which is still problematical) is irrelevant. Only if he paid real-life consequences would there be any takeaway from even the most crushing of defeats, and thus we could theoretically see an endless procession of Trumps running for national office and making a mockery of our country.

Those who think Mr Trump will suffer if he finally "loses," IMO, don't realize that, in his mind it is impossible to "lose." If he stands for election and doesn't win, it will be because it was unfairly taken from him, and not due to his own demerits, which are non-existent in the first place.

Your point that Donald Trump never loses, is an excellent observation, malthaussen. The failures are never his fault, they are always other incompetent peoples' fault. He never bears any responsibility.

I believe something else has happened. For more than the last ten years, Mr. Trump hasn't been able to raise the capital to actually build and own the buildings that bear his name. He's merely licensed the Trump brand for those structures which were built with other peoples' money. Likewise with the products that he promoted including the steaks, vodka, bottled water and board games.

But after all the things that he's said and done over the course of his campaign, he's ruined that brand. There will be very, very few organizations that will want to associate with him when the campaign is over. Keep in mind that corporations seek to avoid controversies because they tend to diminish their sales. Donald Trump's imprimatur will not grow sales after this is finished.

I hope that he stays in the race until November 8th when he is utterly crushed taking with him as many Republicans as possible. In late November, the Trump University trial will begin and it would be wonderful if he loses that, too. Then it's essentially "lights out" for Mr. Trump. He has been such a toxic force in our election system that he must be eradicated. His defeat and demise should be total annihilation for him and a warning to anyone who seeks to follow his fetid path.

... after this debacle, Mr Trump's name will only be useful for selling firearms to "second amendment guys." But I don't think it's really possible to deter narcissistic megalomaniacs. Indeed, it could even be encouraging to them: if this jerk can get so far while being clearly loony-tunes, then maybe dialing back the crazy a little could get one even farther.

The media entertained Trump with the birther movement - they are partially responsible for the monster that has been created.
