The comment was irresponsible and dangerous. That may be how things work in some lawless country overrun by warlords, but in the United States, we're supposed to work within the system. If Trump wants to pretend he said something else, that's between him and whatever is left of his conscience, but it doesn't comport with reality.

The only acceptable follow-up to his reckless statement (and yes, it's obvious what he meant) is a total retraction and an apology. And not one of those "I'm sorry you're so stupid you misunderstood my crystal clear statement." This wasn't a misunderstanding by us; it was a call for violence to his demented followers.
