I had an encounter with the police

I drive truck for a living. With the slump in oil prices, Alberta Provincial revenue is down and many transport companies have been unable to afford the upkeep on their vehicles. Alberta secondary highways often have gravel trucks that lose a bit of their load or for other reasons have stones on them that tend to get thrown around by other vehicles. Hence any windshield older than 6 months tends to have cracks unless promptly dealt with. It's referred to as an “Alberta windshield”. Due to the climate, we have two seasons, winter and construction. Due to a number of fatalities, fines were drastically increased for speeding through construction areas. Due to all of the above, Alberta decided to have a “blitz”.

So I'm driving down the highway minding my own business and see a construction area up ahead. I dutifully slow down to the posted limit. One out of the zone, I turn off onto the next highway to get me where I'm going. I've just nicely gotten around the corner and there's an officer waving me over.

I roll my window down to parlay and he's saying “you're not in trouble, you weren't speeding, it's just an inspection.” He notes the badly cracked windshield. “Oh, it's just an Alberta windshield”. “It's a little worse than that.” “I can see through that little 4 inch square right there.” He laughs and says the problem is the rest of the windshield.

We’re having a good time. He takes me through the rest of the inspection, then asks me how I test the tires. “Errr….by inspection?” He kicks one tire - thud. He kicks the one beside it - thunk. He tests it and it's down to 15 pounds. One of his buddies rolls up, they chat for a bit then he roars off again. He goes in his vehicle then comes back with a citation for the windshield, which has to be fixed in a week, and tells me to go up the road 3 km. There's a gas station there where I can fill up the tire.

I got off easy. Up and down the highway there's trucks pulled over with frustrated drivers on their cell phones explaining why their load will be late.

but I can see why they do it. State patrol was pulling over truck today. I think they do weight checks and safety checks.

Until our senators got it stopped, Homeland Security was pulling over long lines of cars to check for citizenship. The only one they caught was actually a citizen and they took him to immigration jail. He was an American citizen of Hispanic heritage.

He was all afraid, thinking he was going to be shot. They ended up chatting about Land Rovers 'cause the cop was thinking of buying one.

One of his buddies was shot in the neck and killed doing under cover drug work.

Didn't mean to intrude on your post. It's just really heavy on my heart because he is a really good friend of mine and he isn't doing well.

When you know people who work on highway construction crews maybe it's different, but most drivers are assholes and don't seem to care when they're racing through busy work zones full of people out there trying to do their jobs and feed their families.

Let's talk about the drivers in Chattanooga. I am on 27 sometimes when going to meet musicians or shop off the mountain. The speed limit is 45 due to construction on 27, but don't tell that to the Hamilton County official van that flew past me doing at least 70. Don't tell that to the good people of Chattanooga who act like that stretch of 27 is the goddamned Indy 500.

NO ONE in Chattanooga can even keep it at 50 in that workzone. The drivers in Chattanooga don't give a FUCK about the human beings just on the other side of that temporary barrier, and there is never a cop in sight.

I try to keep to the speed limit and end up dealing with a bunch of road-raging Chattanoogans who don't give a damn if they kill someone as long as they get to their destinations a few minutes quicker.

Ah, life in the gracious, sultry Bible Belt where we do unto others if we fucking feel like it, and we never fucking feel like it..... bless your heart...

A HUGE POX on people who speed in work zones, especially when you can see the workers right there. Fuck ALL of you.

On edit: yes, I am salty about it, but I know that people who insist on speeding through work zones are worse than gun humpers. Their "precious" is their right to send their massive machines hurtling through space whenever and wherever they want. So I fight a Yuuuuge losing battle.

And not implying that you, TrogL are a work zone speed demon.

Oh, and imprison Trump. Now.

That is all
