The GOP must dump Trump (By Joe Scarborough)

https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-partisan/wp/2016/08/09/the-gop-must-dump-trump/

The Muslim ban, the David Duke denial, the “Mexican” judge flap, the draft dodger denigrating John McCain’s military service, the son of privilege attacking an immigrant Gold Star mother and the constant revisionism and lying about past political positions taken are but a few of the lowlights that have punctuated Donald Trump’s chaotic chase for the presidency.

Any one of these offenses would have disqualified any other candidate for president. But the Republican nominee remained competitive against a historically weak Democratic nominee on the promise of bringing radical change and dramatic disruption to Washington.

That appears to be changing. Post-convention polls show Trump falling behind by double digits both nationally and in must-win swing states like Pennsylvania, New Hampshire and Virginia.

And the political ride will only get rockier for Trump in the coming days after he suggested that one way to keep a conservative Supreme Court after Hillary Clinton got elected would be to assassinate her or federal judges. Trump and his supporters have been scrambling wildly all day to explain away the inexplicable, but they can stop wasting their time. The GOP nominee was clearly suggesting that some of the “Second Amendment people” among his supporters could kill his Democratic opponent were she to be elected.

More than most, Joe is responsible for Trump even being the GOP nominee... Trump got endless free time on Morning Joe early in the primary season, when almost everyone was treating his entry into the race as a joke.

on this site, I think this is actually a fairly important thing that he's doing.

It's one thing to have a number of Republicans say they can't vote for Trump, or for the 50 National Security heavy-weights to come out and say he's unfit to serve etc., because Trump can simply dismiss them as the 'establishment', and essentially brush their opinions off and his devotees will just go with it. But Morning Joe is a fairly highly regarded show that is actually watched by the Republican masses. And as crazy as it seems, I think that if he says 'dump Trump' especially after being in his corner throughout the primaries, it goes a lot farther with the populace than when a Romney or a Bush says the same thing.

Yet republicans never win it. No way they are winning it this time, and they probably still wouldn't have won it even if Trump wasn't the nominee.

What kind of crap is that? I'm all for calling out Trump, but why call Hillary weak... in particular "historically" weak? What the hell does that mean? The author never explained that statement and it seemed out of place. Is it because of the perceptions about her generated by right wing propaganda all these years? I think she is a pretty strong candidate that pretty much the whole republican party has been trying to tear her down for decades and she is still going and she could potentially (hopefully) win this thing. I can't help but think again that this has something to do with Hillary being a women... (and all women are weak compared to men right?) so that makes her "historically" weak. Did no one else notice that jab against Hillary that was thrown in there?

I think all the shit that's been thrown at Hillary Clinton over the years has only served to make her stronger.

In fact, I would argue that she's "historically" the strongest candidate - battle tested, experienced, ready to serve.

One may disagree with some of her positions, but there can be no doubt that she will be an effective leader.

Consequently, there is a testable hypothesis about who supports and who abandons Trump, and the evidence can be sought along the spectrum of need to hold close to support from that base.

The conjecture is that people who don't really depend on the republican base can easily abandon Trump and can freely call for his removal. People who need Trump's base can't. That hypothetical was examined in this article:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/powerpost/paloma/daily-202/2016/08/09/daily-202-why-some-republican-politicians-are-really-coming-out-against-trump/57a94085cd249a7e29d0cf87/

When you consider Scarborough, his future success doesn't depend on Trump's base so much as it depends on Scarborough maintaining some credibility as having prescient political sagacity. And foreseeing Trump as disaster doesn't require being the Oracle of Delphi

They will stick with him, no matter what.

However, Joe is right about this. Sticking with Trump means it will be much more difficult to rebuild their Party. Their wisest move would be to dump him.

We are in unchartered waters but that does not mean that the way forward is not clear. It is.
1.The Secret Service should interview Donald Trump and ask him to explain his threatening comments.
2.Paul Ryan and every Republican leader should denounce in the strongest terms their GOP nominee suggesting conservatives could find the Supreme Court more favorable to their desires if his political rival was assassinated.
3.Paul Ryan and every Republican leader should revoke their endorsement of Donald Trump. At this point, what else could Trump do that would be worse than implying the positive impact of a political assassination?
4.The Republican Party needs to start examining quickly their options for removing the Republican nominee.

A bloody line has been crossed that cannot be ignored. At long last, Donald Trump has left the Republican Party few options but to act decisively and get this political train wreck off the tracks before something terrible happens.

Trump did not merely win the nomination. He got the most Republican primary votes of any candidate ever. Suggesting that the GOP somehow reject Trump ignores that most Of the GOP's love what he says.

Think of what Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity say, and what is the difference?

Look at your party. If you don't agree with trump, you don't agree with the republican party. To suggest that the gop is anything else is to have lived the last 20 years in a rosy bubble.

I suggest that scarborough is completely out of touch with the republican electorate.
