Dem state Rep. Jonathan Brostoff said he was thrown to the ground and handcuffed by Milwaukee police last night as he spoke to others near a park that has been the scene of protests and violence following an officer-involved shooting.

Milwaukee police are looking into the detention of Brostoff, D-Milwaukee, and a member of the ACLU to make sure proper procedures were followed, a spokesman said.

Brostoff said he was eventually released after some at the scene noted he was an elected official. An observer posted video to Facebook showing Brostoff handcuffed and then put into a police van before he was let go.

"It was the privilege of being elected more than anything," Brostoff said of police releasing him.

Brostoff said he was on the Sherman Park neighborhood corner speaking with others in an attempt to de-escalate tensions after he heard "stuff might be going down" last night.

He declined to go into details about why officers approached him and handcuffed him other than saying he was not doing anything to provoke the police or draw their attention.
