Thinks gun is phone; shoots himself

Elderly man injured in accidental shooting at dental office

A 72-year-old Huber Heights man could be charged with using weapons while intoxicated after reportedly shooting himself in the hand while at the dentist.

A Clark County sheriff’s report states patient, James Short, 72, told police he heard his phone ringing and went to answer it but accidentally grabbed his weapon and shot himself.

Clark County Sheriff Gene Kelly said no formal charges have been filed yet and the case will go before the prosecutor.

Short was treated at Miami Valley Hospital for a graze to the left side of his stomach, as well as a wound on his left hand near the thumb.

I had to take my Father-in-Law's guns away when he started seeing ghost and becoming irrational from illness. He wasn't happy, being retired military and retired police -- over 50 years total. Thing is, he wasn't that big on guns, but I saw him reach for one in his night stand when my late wife was walking into the room to check on him.

These are accidents just waiting to hurt innocent people. Yet, we are told it's the price we have to pay to coddle gunners.

Although using weapons while intoxicated at the dentist - that brings up a million questions. Was he drunk before going to the dentist? Or was he high off the Novocaine?

I can't scare up any compassion for gunners who shoot themselves.

Come on man. I'm all for the 2A, but bringing a gun to the dentist is just paranoid as hell. Wtf is gonna happen? What maniac in their right mind would pick a dental office for their killing spree? They'd just be putting the poor patients out of their misery lol!

Many medical offices have signs asking cell phones be turned off.
Maybe they should ask you to unload your weapon.

And, if it was just the dental pain meds, they'd include that in the charges?

You'd have to awfully intoxicated to mistake a pistol for a phone, wouldn't you?
