McDonald made it legal to own and keep a handgun in your home, assuming you had a state issued FOID card which requires a background check. Prior to McDonald, even owning a handgun was a felony charge. Not that it stopped crime in the '80's and '90's from reaching record murder levels we still haven't matched.

Ezell just made it legal to have shooting ranges in the city. But they are still playing around with that decision.

As of now, there are still no gun stores or ranges in the entire city (except the FBI range in the sub basement of a major bank building in the Loop, but not many people even know that's there) and only 3 gun stores in all of suburban Cook County.

Concealed Carry was passed state wide in mid 2013, but the people doing the shootings you read about don't have FOID cards or carry permits and haven't passed any background checks. Since it passed, a little over 200,000 people have been issued permits to date.

If you want to see who is shooting who and where, go to HeyJackass.com they keep track day by day.

The people that go through the background check to get a FOID card and 16 hours of training and fingerprinting and FBI clearance for a carry permit aren't the ones shooting up Englewood, Chatham and the other South and West Side neighborhoods.

Over 78% of those shot so far this year are African American, between the ages of 16 and 34. The shooters, when they can be caught, are pretty much the same group. Hispanics account for a little over 16% of the remaining victims.

Most of the front page violence is isolated to a few neighborhoods and is gang and drug related. The problem is the criminals are arrested and get out early if they go in at all.

The 2 guys arrested for killing 15 year old Hadiya Pendleton in 2013 (the local girl that was at President Obama's inauguration) were both arrested 3 or 4 times in the 6 months before she was killed, including felony gun crimes (unlawful use of a weapon) and armed robbery. But they were released again and again after a week or two in jail. "Revolving door justice"
