Last Friday, Washington Post reporter David Farenthold broke a blockbuster of a story about Donald Trump, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, and a clear-cut pay-to-play scheme. Our report on that is here. It's a blockbuster of a report that can leave no doubt about the fact that there was a quid pro quo between Bondi and Trump, with an equally clear effort to conceal it on the Trump Foundation reports.
In other words, it's truly a scandal. A REAL scandal. One that should have dominated today's Sunday shows and the newspaper headlines this weekend. Yet, there was no mention that I saw on any Sunday shows, and headlines are still dominated with bogus Clinton email stories. Curiously, only MSNBC has reported the story at all. Joy Reid did a lengthy segment while sitting in for Chris Hayes on All In last Friday night, a bit of which we've clipped above. In the words of Joe Biden, this is a BFD.
After sitting through all of the Sunday shows today, I wondered about where all of the stories on this were, so I went on a hunt. I searched the transcripts for Fox News, CNN and MSNBC to see where they had done any reporting on this. There are also huge questions about whether Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton also dropped a Trump University investigation after receiving $35,000 from Trump, but for now let's focus on Bondi since the Trump Foundation admitted they sent her a contribution when they weren't supposed to.
The last mention of Bondi on Fox News was on August 24th, ahead of a Trump rally where she was slated to warm up the crowd. Before that, the last mention was during the Republican National Convention, where she was a speaker.
There have been no mentions of Bondi whatsoever on CNN since Wolf Blitzer interviewed a Gold Star parent who talked about a meeting Bondi facilitated with Trump.

(82,849 posts)What the media understand is a stove-piped Rube Goldberg-style machine of disparate causes and effects. Wealthy donor A gives money to the Clinton Foundation in 2007. Someone on A's behalf contacts the Secretary of State's office in 2011 looking for a service thousands of people contact State for every year. State turns down the supplicant, because he didn't fill out the proper paperwork. By the time State's rejection gets to A, he's already figured out another way to get what he's looking for done without intervention from the State Department.
See, now THAT's a pay-for-play scandal the popular media can really appreciate and understand.

I want to call it gross negligence but what they are doing, or rather not doing, is INTENTIONAL.
They are holding back because they want a horse race. It's all about ratings and profit.
Almost nothing on the rape lawsuit, his racist past, his outsourcing of labor for his brands, his hiring illegal immigrants for his building projects, his financial ties to Russia.

(17,199 posts)Donald Trump on Monday called for a special prosecutor to investigate Hillary Clinton's tenure as secretary of state, as questions emerge over whether foreign donations to the non-profit Clinton Foundation influenced her decision-making while in office.
The GOP nominee demanded an "expedited investigation by a special prosecutor" into Clinton's ties to the Clinton Foundation during her time at the State Department. "The Clintons made the State Department into the same kind of pay-to-play operation as the Arkansas government was," Trump said.
The comment was Trump's first explicit call for direct legal action against his Democratic rival beyond his common stump-speech claim that Clinton should be jailed for her use of a private email server while secretary of state. The Justice Department declined to bring charges against Clinton over her email server.

In what can only be described as an epic failure, a Trump spokesman first admits that Trump participates in "Pay for Play" deals, but then tries to justify it because he is a private citizen and *everyone* does it.
Clearly, Steve Cortes has no idea that donating money (paying off) officials to get favors or special access is patently illegal, for any citizen. His spin comes so fast and so hard, you can see his eyeballs nearly roll back in his head as he tries to say that Trump plans to end it. Yes, you have to hear it for yourself:
CORTES: Donald Trump is a private yes, he has admitted that to citizen. Some degree there was pay to play that he tried to get access from politicians Which, by the way, significant business people do all the time.
REID: Wait a minute. wait a minute. Steve, are you saying that significant business people regularly engage in pay to play and that that's okay because they're private citizens?
