Its very doubtful that will happen. But its possible.
I havent yet decided whether Ill overdose, head for the airport (my passport is up to date), cry and hope Im just having a bad trip, establish a liberal militia (which seems to be a contradiction in terms and would be useless in any event), or just go to bed and lay there waiting to die.
In no way can I bring myself to believe that there are enough ignorant/bigoted/stupid people in this country to elect Trump. And I dont think the GOP tactics of denying minority voters access to the polls in many Republican controlled states will be sufficient to beat Hillary.
Nonetheless, its something that keeps me up at night, and Im sure many of you are also losing sleep over this possibility. I cant wait until the night of Nov. 8th when Hillary Clinton is declared our next president. I cant wait for that night when we no longer have to live in dread of a fascist American government.
So, what are you doing to cope with the thoughts Ive expressed here and which Im virtually certain that many of you share?
Conversely, what are your celebration plans if/when Hillary wins?

(118,282 posts)Y'know, stuff like knocking doors and ringing phones -- trying to make sure enough people are eager enough for my candidates to win that they actually go vote
That way, if my side loses, I don't have to wring my hands tearfully and wonder what I could have done to prevent our loss -- plus, I've been practicing all the organizing skills (like knocking doors and ringing phones) that can be used create effective opposition

(1,907 posts)Just so I don't get grief from this post. Again sarcasm coming up.
Buy a lot of guns and ammo in bulk. Because dipshit is going to have the cockroaches coming out of everywhere. He is normalizing the far right. So I guess I'll be a alt/far left gun totter.
Now a little more serious side. I don't think he will be our next prez. But even if he does I have a feeling both sides of the aisle would be shutting him down on anything close to actually extreme. Even with a Clinton win the far right nut cases seem to be emboldened and I think there will be problems with them. He has brought out the worse in America and reveled in it.

Your post has struck to the heart of my OP and has made me stop and think. If I ran, would I regret it the rest of my life? If I stayed, could I find a way to deal with the horrors that would surely accompany a "Trump presidency?"
The reality of my OP indicates that I'm thinking of no one but myself.
Thank you for reminding me that we are all in this together. I only hope that I have the courage to stay here and fight the good fight. Hopefully, Hillary will crush him and it won't be necessary. But there is always that what if ...

Oddly, me and the hubby were having this same chat last week. But it was more along the lines of "What if the country's worst nightmare came to be and the don of cheeto won? What would happen first, a world war or a civil war or would it be the utter collapse of our country then civil war with whats left?"
We both agreed, the don of cheeto would say something dumb, and sarcastic, that he didn't mean. Which would start a war. All the poor and people of any color would be forced to fight it. Sending immigrants out of our country would cease. We would need the labor. Instead of being deported, they would end up in forced labor camps. Not soon there-after a point would come that both Muslims and Mexicans would be rounded up, no matter if they are citizens or not, and also be sent to labor camps. You know the war effort.
Then I reminded my hubby that I along with his kids, would be among the people sent to labor camps as I am half Mexican. He would be ok, he is pure white.
That's a pretty glum future. So we better get out and vote! I don't want to end up in a forced labor camp!

For those of you who are jokingly saying you'll commit suicide, grow the fuck up. Suicide is something that claims countless lives every year, and your jokes about committing suicide are a slap to the face for anyone who has had friends or family members commit suicide.
Actually, call that number anyway and ask if suicide is a joking matter. I'm sure they'll give you a far better explanation for why you're immature brats than I could.

(2,108 posts)The republicans will move to impeach him immediately. they know he's an uncontrollable loose cannon. Pence would be a puppet president. I'd bet the republican powers that be have already had the back room conversation with Pence. They'll roll it out as a gesture to heal the nation after a tumultuous campaigning season.
But this will never happen. She's winning the electoral college in state by state polls.

Democracy.
The country will survive, no matter who wins or loses. It always has.
I doubt Trump will win. If he does, that's democracy. I only get one vote. I can't really control or change the outcome, so I tend not to worry too much about it.

(79 posts)He'll be the President. We need him to be good at the job. We need him to be successful. I'll hope that he will be even knowing that he probably won't. The fact is, no one really knows what this goof will do if he should win. There are several possibilities but only one is good. He could take the job as a vanity position and leave all of the Presidenting to Mike Pence. Which would be an utter disaster. He could actually attempt to do the job with his cockamamie ideas and influence from the very worst people in the country. Which would also be an utter disaster. Or he could do the job and revert to his original ideas which are really quite liberal. He's the kind a guy who doesn't really give a shit what anybody thinks. He'll just do what he wants to do regardless of whether the party likes it or not. This is the least likely scenario but probably the best scenario we can hope for.
Chances are he'll be an absolute lunatic and embarrassment worse than Bush ever was and has a good chance of getting us all killed over a Twitter rant or offhand insult. But I'll give him a chance at first. What other choice is there?

(3,922 posts)I've been thinking about leaving the U.S. for some time now anyway.
If this guy wins, it validates the very worst possibility: that this country is hopelessly screwed and over populated by ignorant, nationalist, fascist wanna-bes.
The fact is, the U.S. isn't all that great. Many other countries have better infrastructure, a better social structure, and a much more sensible way of living day-to-day. Even developing countries in Central and South America have areas where many expats live and live well.
I have been researching places to go but I have yet to hit a nerve with any of them. If our worst nightmare comes true, I will embark on trips to personally visit the sites I am considering: Panama, Spain, and Portugal are currently my top picks.
My wife is recently retired and I'm next in a few more months, we're free to go and fortunate enough to be able to leave. My father's lineage goes back to the 17th C in this country, but all good things (was it ever really good?) come to an end.
It's truly disgusting these day with the media frenzy for Trump and the false narrative that has been painted upon Hillary - and make no mistake about that, she is in deep trouble this election - she'll be lucky to pull it off, running against an absolutely deplorable human specimen. The bullshit about a freakin' football player who will or will not stand for the goddamn national anthem is beyond inane, but that's America. Guess I'm just not for these times in this America.

(31,384 posts)In 2005--in response to a second term for Bush--we seriously looked in to leaving the US and actually bought property in a development by Americans in Panama that was under construction/
A nightmare ensued--financial problems, labor problems, legal problems--so be careful about investing in anything that isn't already built. (We did eventually get our money back.)
I am extremely anxious that so many people in this country are planning to vote for Trump. I agree with your assessment that they are ignorant, nationalist, fascist wanna-bes. Ignorant, racist, misogynistic bigots. And it scares me that Trump has 'normalized' their white supremacy. And they have guns. Scares the crap out of me.
Now, though, it's 2016 and I don't have the patience or energy to deal with moving to another country at our ages (me 65, hubby 74) I've told my husband Kauai would fill the bill for me: I would not want to be on the mainland US if Trump wins.

He will cite that his business is more important than the presidency, or he will experience a crush of lawsuits and scandals. He won't make enough money as President to make it worthwhile.
