Experts are predicting that sex with robots will become widespread within the next decades – and robots could be better in bed than any fleshy partner, an expert has revealed.

Joel Snell, a robotics expert from Kirkwood College in Iowa, ‘Because they would be programmable, sexbots would meet each individual user’s needs.’

‘Robotic sex may become addictive. Sexbots would always be available and could never say no, so addictions would be easy to feed.

By the year 2050, sex with robots will be common – and some people may actually fall in love with androids.

In their paper ‘Robots, men and sex tourism’ Ian Yeoman and Michelle Mars of the University of Victoria Management School in Wellington, New Zealand, say that robot prostitutes will be common, but expensive, by 2050.

They imagine Amsterdam brothels offering, ‘a range of sexual gods and goddesses of different ethnicities, body shapes, ages, languages and sexual features.’

I think it would be a huge step toward freeing and de-sexualizing women. It would possibly mean the end to body shaming, and unrealistic beauty standards. It could possibly even end the practice of rape. Think about how it could render moot the underlying tension that makes gender such a fraught issue.

I confess that I'm less optimistic; I'm very confident that these companion robots will be customized to the height of unrealistic beauty standards, against which most mere humans will seem shabby and plain. Also, since rape is often about control and dominance rather than sex, I'm not sure how much the presence of "willing" sexbots will reduce the incidence of rape.

Of course, I'm speaking from a GenX perspective, and revolutionary inventions initially tend to mimic the form and appearance of the thing they're replacing, so maybe in a few generations the ideal sexbot won't look human at all.

Devices such as the Oculus Rift. You'll put on a set of goggles where any sort of scene appears. Then a robot crawls off of its charging station onto of you for whatever shenanigans the user has planned. The motions will be synced up to whatever video is running. I can see this being good (in a weird way) for long distance relationships. Programmable macros that make the robot act like your real life partner.
