Surprise! Beijing police are having a hard time enforcing new electric scooter and segway ban
You're not going to believe this, but Beijing police are finding it rather difficult to implement a new ban on electric scooters and segways.
The predictably troublesome ban went into effect last week in both Beijing and Shanghai with traffic police authorized to hand out verbal warnings and fines of 10 RMB to violators. There's just a few problems:
"We did not get any specific notices for how to implement these regulations," one police officer told ECNS.
"I will stop a rider when I see him or her using it on the road. But whether to give a fine depends on their attitude," another added.
Anyway, it's unclear how much good a 10 RMB fine will do. Electric scooters and segways are becoming increasingly popular in Chinese cities as a way to weave through streets packed with traffic jams. The problem is that these types of vehicles have no national safety standards -- they aren't classified as either motor vehicles or non-motorized ones according to Chinese law.
