LOS ANGELES The Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy said Thursday it plans "the largest rally in U.S. history against Wal-Mart" on Saturday, June 30, to protest Wal-Mart's plan to open a Neighborhood Market in Chinatown.
The rally is being billed as "a march against low-wage jobs." In a video released in conjunction with publicity on the march, a LAANE spokeswoman said Wal-Mart has "a reputation as a predatory company" that pays people so little, they must rely on public assistance. The video also says the opening of a Neighborhood Market in the close-knit Chinatown community would mean a lot of small Chinese-owned businesses in the area would have to close.
However, a group of Chinese community leaders from the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, the Asian Business Association and the tenant association representing the space where the store will open made public a letter they sent to residents of Chinatown expressing their full support for the store. "We ask that you join us in supporting this grocery store that has long been missing from our community," the letter said.

(47,675 posts)WalMart is trying to build a store on an empty car dealership lot next to a mall. There was a long-standing Toys R Us behind the mall. Since the lot they want to build on is too small to accommodate parking, they want to put in a parking garage. The store plans to be open 24 hours and have a lot of lighting, requires demolition of a stand of old trees that serve as a shield for the residential areas, and their solution is to put up a fence that won't even come close to blocking the view or lights. But the real reason for the choice of spot is obviously to continue their assault on toy stores by selling below cost for a while.
Toys R Us has been a major target for WalMart and they're obviously aware of that. So, they built a Toys R Us/Babies R Us superstore in a commercial district on a major shopping road not that far from the old location and moved. WalMart's still pushing for the controversial store, but it won't impact Toys R Us now. I think that was a really clever move. The old store was sort of dated and not easy to access.

(57,936 posts)The experience in my mother's hometown is instructive.
Walmart came in, destroyed business for a number of smaller stores, and then moved away from the town itself to an area where it could, presumably, pay lower taxes.
Lots of Chinatown businesses will suffer from this.

(53,521 posts)Or a similar big box store like Target. Many of us don't have the money to shop at other places, or there are no other places around because the big boxes drove them out of business.

(194 posts)if you you in the US you should also have access to the USPS.
You do have the CHOICE of mail order do you not?
Granted not for fresh food but even in places where Wal Mart is pretty much the only game in town there is at least 1 real grocery store or maybe even a local farmers market to buy fresh food.
You also have the CHOICE of moving.
You do have choices, perhaps you just do not realize how many you have..

(194 posts)So I give you multiple choices and you did not and I am just guess you did not appreciate, understand, comprehend or just did not care for my solutions.
That is fine with me but you could have said Thanks but no thanks for the advice
Enjoy living with your CHOICES in life, the Walton Family thanks you as I am sure the multiple business that are now closed in your area do too thanks to your patronage of Wal Mart.
Solidarity for the 1% eh?

(194 posts)If people choose to shop at Wal Mart they can but to justify their actions by saying they have no choice is 100% BS.
One always has a choice no matter what situation one is in.

(114,904 posts)moving often isn't a choice and if you're really strapped for funds, I completely understand shopping at Walmart.
