In a private email exchange last year leaked this week by hackers, former Secretary of State Colin Powell discussed Israel's nuclear weapons capability with a friend, saying the country has 200 warheads.
.....
"Gen. Powell has not been briefed or had any knowledge from U.S. sources on the existence and or size of an Israeli nuclear capability," the statement said. "He like many people believe that there may be a capability and the number 200 has been speculated upon in open sources." It added: "This email was written 10 years after he left government and has not received briefings on classified matters."
Powell would not say whether he still retains a security clearance.

I haven't dug around for it, but I sure would like to read the text of those emails, because that would reveal a lot about their tone. Were they written in a manner that makes it clear he was merely speculating? Or does the text imply a level of certainty to the statement he's making?
Because if I have to be honest, at this point, I really just can't take Powell's word for it.

(47,552 posts)2. He expects us to believe ANYTHING that spews from his lying gob?
We all saw him sit in front of the UN and lie his fucking ass off about WMD. A lot of us knew he was lying at the time. The rest found out later when there were NO WMD IN IRAQ just like the weapons inspectors said.
From the cover-up of My Lai to the unnecessary devastation that is the Iraq War, that man ain't nothing but a lying piece of shit war criminal.
I'll smile when they tell me he's dead.

That would actually make sense.

...so he WAS briefed about them previously at some point.
