Seriously, this terrorist wasn't exactly a terrifying guy. He belongs in prison for a long time, but he isn't exactly causing me to quake in my boots.
All that this stuff ultimately is is a subset of crime and not materially all that important to our overall national problems. 41,000 people kill themselves every year. That's a bigger problem. We have 15,000ish homicides a year. That's a bigger problem. Hundreds of thousands die prematurely due to health problems we can fix every year. Let's focus on important things and let law enforcement do its job like it did today.

(82,849 posts)It shows how serious we are if we use a cannon to dispatch an annoying fly. Anything less, and you're putting the Safety and Security of The American People at terrible risk. Which means everybody everywhere needs to be scared silly so the Republicans and other authoritarians can ride to our rescue, like so many helpless damsels in distress.

It all good (for the bottom line).

(82,849 posts)Crime committed, facts and evidence assembled, perpetrator identified and apprehended. Dull. Like an episode of a police procedural. But wild antics and tactics by a Rogue Cop Who Doesn't Play by the Rules is a lot more exciting, and could lead anywhere! Including power, money, no-bid contracts, and so forth.

(21,328 posts)Ordinary crime dwarfs terrorism as a problem. That this gets as much attention as it does is why people do it.

(7,947 posts)Those aren't attacks against the state, or "the west", so it's going to be looked at differently by those in charge. You can be disloyal to a friend, and you might lose a friendship out of it. If you're disloyal to the government in some official capacity, you could be tried for treason and put into prison.
