Apparently pretty much everyone I know is a bed-wetter.
The term gained currency in politics in January 2010 when Obamas 2008 campaign manager, David Plouffe, in a Washington Post opinion piece titled November doesnt need to be a nightmare for Democrats, gave this advice to his party: No bed-wetting. Instead of fearing what may happen, he wrote, lets fight like hell.
He could have gone with the blander, No hand-wringing, which wouldnt have risked offending enuresis sufferers. But bed-wetting got traction in the American political lexicon even though, as it turned out, Republicans picked up 63 seats in the House that November and recaptured the majority, a nightmare that retroactively warranted plenty of dread about nocturnal incontinence.
Plouffe was back at it during this summers Democratic Convention. No bed-wetting, he tweeted. Clinton will enter August with strong electoral college advantage. But that lead has since been blown, and now my in-box is positively leaking anxiety.
Tell me Trump wont win, my friends are emailing. Its a slow-motion train wreck, theyre saying, and I feel helpless to stop it. Why is the media letting Trump get away with it? I wouldnt be so nervous if it werent for Gary Johnson; if it werent for millennial apathy, for alt-right propaganda, for Paul Ryans cowardice; if it werent for sexism, racism, infotainment, Idiocracy, plutocracy, Citizens United, voter suppression... Help!

(80,708 posts)Two words: Marijuana legalization. Period.
Millennials in particular don't want government telling them what they can do with their bodies, they don't like people who want to censor what they can read, watch, or see on the intertubes, and..... they overwhelmingly support marijuana legalization.
Since we're ostensibly the party of choice, we should be running away with it. Why we aren't pressing the GOP on these matters- everything from Chris Christie's hypocritical drive to save people from "unhealthy" habits like pot smoking as he stuffs his face with little debbie snack cakes, to HLA Plank and the Santorum-esque promise to do away with internet smut in the Republican Platform- is beyond me.
Only thing I can think of is, some of the Brock-type beltway conventional wisdom people have it in their heads they're gonna appeal to "megachurch moms" and "values voters" or some shit. But in chasing after that elusive demographic, they're ceding freedom-minded Millennials to Gary Johnson, for no good reason at all.
And the author is right. Trump is gonna show up at the 1st debate and make some guttural grunts, maybe fart a couple times, and the media will fall all over themselves to spin how brilliant he was.
