Kahneman noted that when we see a word like "vomit" it affects us in ways we are unaware of, but also what it does is it makes the object paired with it disgusting, aversive, at least for a while.
Does this sound like Donald Trump in action?

(I sure as hell hope he is not winning, but we should be very alert.)
What Kahneman discovered through decades of research is that we often tend to form our opinions immediately and then we look for arguments. Coming to immediate opinons is part of the "Fast Thinking" aspect of our cognitive functionoing, what Kahneman calls, "System 1." That system is fast, reactive, is sloppy and it is unnoticed by us. The more deliberate, logical system we also have is slow, is effortful, and is not always used to correct System 1 errors.

"Something clicked in my head today probably not a unique or maybe even noteworthy contribution to the vast amount of words that have been penned regarding the rise of a certain rising Republican politician. But I think its worth sharing for further consideration and discussion, so here it is.
"In the Washington Post today, Caitlyn Dewey writes about Donald Trumps tweeting of an obviously fake video that portrays a protester as a supporter of ISIS. If you werent already depressed by the fact that this happened, Dewey has worse news (emphases mine):
"To critical consumers of Internet content, the video immediately raises a whole bunch of red flags. But Trump is an infamously uncritical Internet consumer, and in an interview yesterday with Chuck Todd, he defended the tweet under that logic.
All I know is whats on the Internet, he told Todd which, if interpreted literally, may be the single most terrifying thing that any presidential candidate has ever said. In an environment where one can find proof, of a kind, for literally every conspiracy theory, wild allegation and fringe point of view, Trump has essentially admitted that he lacks either the fundamental literacy skills to sift fact from fiction, or a basic interest in distinguishing between the two.
"In neither respect is he alone, unfortunately: Two decades of credibility research suggest that virtually no one vets the stuff they read or watch online.
"Instead as U.C. Santa Barbaras Miriam Metzger and Andrew Flanagin have found over a series of more than a dozen studies mainstream Internet users evaluating new information frequently rely on factors like what Web sites look like, whether their friends appear to trust them, and if it confirms what they think already. That isnt just because people are biased or ignorant or lazy. Its because evaluating information takes a lot of mental bandwidth, and frankly, no one has enough of it to fact-check everything."

Trump is coarse for a reason and it may well be paying off for him in ways we do not realize

(1,779 posts)certainly are attempts to portray women as gross, unclean, etc.
Remember how he criticized Hillary for using the bathroom. "Disgusting," he said about her having to use the bathroom during an early debate she had with Bernie and O'Malley. "Blood coming out of her where-ever!" he said of Megan Kelly. He was incensed that a woman lawer had to have a break to express milk for a baby.
He regularly twists his face into expressions of sneering disgust and uses words to express his disgust of things. Consistent with this is his lack of a smile, of warmth, etc.
Easy to see how he would appeal to a particulare type of male, and easy to see why women viscerally dislike him.
