New poll finds Colorado in dead heat between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump

WASHINGTON — Poll results released Monday show Colorado is up-for-grabs ahead of the first presidential debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.

The survey by CNN and ORC International found 42 percent of likely Colorado voters backed Trump compared to the 41 percent who supported Clinton; a statistical tie given the margin of error of 3.5 percentage points.

Meanwhile, Libertarian Gary Johnson continued to affect the race with a third-place showing of 13 percentage points. In a hypothetical match-up that didn’t include Johnson or Green Party candidate Jill Stein, Clinton registered 49 percent support to Trump’s 47 percent.

The CNN/ORC findings are the latest sign that the presidential fight in Colorado is tightening after a string of mid-summer polls showed Clinton with a double-digit lead.

Some — though not all — of the more recent polling have shown a closer contest after a key Clinton ally decided to scale back its TV advertising in Colorado, and Trump and his campaign have paid more attention to the Centennial State.

She led Trump 52 percent to 42 percent on who was better to “handle the responsibilities of commander in chief” and 61 percent to 32 percent on which candidate had the right temperament to serve as president, according to the CNN/ORC results. More Colorado voters also thought Clinton would do a better job on immigration and foreign policy.

Trump outpaced Clinton 47 percent to 40 percent on trustworthiness and had an edge of three percentage points on economic issues.

Less close than the presidential contest is Colorado’s race for U.S. Senate, according to the poll. Incumbent Democrat Michael Bennet led Republican challenger Darryl Glenn by 10 percentage points among likely voters.
