(149,614 posts)Did this just come out of left field, or have you always had political differences?
Just curious...or maybe you'd never gotten into the politics that you each followed.
I'm sorry. Losing a good friend is never easy, especially when there is so much bitterness.
Until this year I was a semi-Republican. Trump is what drove me to want to vote Democrat. He (my former friend) is the kind of person who thinks anything Trump says should be treated as Holy Scripture

(66,341 posts)I used to be a vocal, outspoken supporter of Ronald Reagan. Like a lot of people, I got suckered by the sunny grin and the optimistic phraseology. I cast my vote for Bush Sr in 1988 and 1992. Conservative Republicanism was never a very good fit with my personal outlook, but it was popular in the '80's.
Like anyone with a brain and a heart, I was horrified by the Republican takeover of Congress in 1994. I voted for Bill Clinton in 1996. And sElection 2000 solidified my ideological outlook as a die-hard liberal Democrat. I found DU like an oasis in a desert in May, 2001. And I've been here ever since. People who know me know my personal political refrain: "Liberal till I DIE!"
I'm glad you have found the people who understand you. Welcome to DU.

(1,098 posts)Even the ones that claim they're voting Republican to support the party rather than to support Trump will still be complicit in enabling him. Someone as vile as Trump should stand no chance of becoming President. Hell, someone as vile as him shouldn't have even stood a chance to become the nominee of a major political party.
Regardless of what people think about Hillary, there is no way anyone who isn't a bigot or as dumb as a rock can argue that she is somehow the worse choice and voting for Trump is therefore justified.

(11,415 posts)are lucky to see them for what they are and realize that that is not what this country is about. Fear and a sense of superiority is driving them to be so stupid to the loses that we will all see if Trump gets power over us.
We have had a very rational, intelligent, and compassionate President for almost eight years and we are spoiled. They can't even imagine the loses we would experience in personal liberties and international standing. Not to mention how these greedy heartless get-a-headers will strip our personal and national financial worth.
Pity them but be ready to fight them legally and logically using every angle.
Hillary is also rational, intelligent, and compassionate with a hands on wisdom that will guide us into a better future for ourselves and our children. She is also surrounded by those who have and will work to form a more perfect union.

(5,611 posts)Based on what you've posted you had absolutely nothing in common with this person. Your personalities aren't similar or sympathetic and you certainly disagreed on core political beliefs. Are you very young -- like in your early twenties? You sound very young to me as friends doing "stupid shit" declines rapidly in one's 30s and 40s. Also one's tolerance for others who do "stupid shit" declines rapidly in one's 30s and 40s as life decisions -- spouses, children, careers, houses, etc -- require responsibility.

(4,238 posts)We're a handful of couples that have known each other for decades. They're mainly on my husband's side, but we socialize often. All conservative, which has never been an issue before this election. Trump has exposed a bigotry that to this day I didn't even know existed in them. Example: two of the couples were talking about their recent vacations to Mexico (one to Cancun, the other to Mazatlan.) Both raving about how beautiful it all was....except for "all the Mexicans" The most rabid of them is a woman who has used every social program imaginable, has had at least one abortion, and whose English skills (they're all immigrants) are elementary, even after living in this country for over 20 years. I nearly bloodied my tongue biting down so hard.

(19,372 posts)Here's the kicker though: Trump is allowing many Americans to let the rest of us know who they really are. It's rather disturbing, but as they say "sunlight is the best disinfectant".
I run around in a pretty diverse group across the political spectrum, and up to the point of Trump's nomination those on the right griped and complained, but if they had hatred at their core they kept it well hidden. Trump's blatant misogyny and bigotry has somehow made it acceptable in the minds of some of our fellow citizens to allow their own feelings of intolerance and hate to become part of their puplic display. Well that's actually ok as far as I'm concerned because now I know with whom I am truly dealing with and can act accordingly.
Maybe some day these people will come to their senses and realize that they were taken by a conman and grifter, and who knows, maybe they'll come to understand that the GOP could give a bucket of spit about them, but in the meantime I will automatically discount the opinion of anybody who supports Trump.

(11,816 posts)I have Republican friends who "just can't stand Hillary" blah blah blah.
Most of them won't vote at all, but a few will probably hold their noses and vote Trump because, as I heard one con on an MSNBC focus group say "He might be a jackass, but if he's the jackass leading the conservative wagon train, so be it." Okay, fine, not worth losing a friend over.
But people who actually LIKE him and LIKE what he says? No, thank you. Don't need that in my life.

(3,660 posts)If some ridiculous fringe wackjob ever becomes the Dem nominee I'd vote for them even against a more moderate Rep., because Republicans in power cause harm and Republicans in total control would maximize harm. I am well beyond Yellow Dog level. I understand people have the same attitude the other way around. They will vote for Trump to try to stop Clinton, just like I'd vote for, say, Cornel West to stop Ryan or whoever else they pick next. But to think that Trump, or West in the obverse, is a great and laudable choice for POTUS in and of themselves? Nuts is a kind term, especially in Trump's case (West at least has the advantage of intellect).

(174 posts)who was taken over by the darkside. At one time, he was a fun-loving out-going guy who changed over a period of time by watching and listening to right-wing radio and TV. He embraced every issue that he heard on these stations. He was always talking of privatization, taxes, postal workers, teachers, anti-anything liberal, etc. It was too much - I couldn't take it any longer and am much better off without his constant negativity towards Obama (who he never gave any credit and would imprison if he could) & the Dems.
