(5,811 posts)he comes off as if he can't read and does understand what he's reading.
The apparent fact that he can't read is consistent with his self-described developmental history in which he states he loved to fight and was always looking for a fight. He was kicked out of several private schools because of his aggression and violence.
He may have a learning disability and may also be brain damaged.

(9,696 posts)I knew someone with a lot of similarities to tRump, and they also didn't read much - just enough to get by. There were always the excuses, the lost glasses, to busy, changing the subject. The person I knew probably read at about a 4th grade level. tRummp's obviously not very smart, so probably built up a lot of defenses to hide the fact that he couldn't read.
Samantha is awsome!

(54,065 posts)But if he's not had to do any in-depth reading since, say, the mid 1970s, what comprehension skills he's had may have atrophied. He's certainly not an intellectually curious soul. We do know he can at least read newspaper headlines. Dictating a tweet to a secretary at the office is one thing. But I don't see how he'd have an office assistant on hand for those manic 3am tweetstorms of his.

(60,010 posts)and Trump's behavior at the deposition that I saw was similar to behaviors I have seen from those clients, who duck and dodge but are ashamed to say they cannot read.
After enough experience with folks like that, it does seem pretty clear.
Might have something to do with dyslexia....perhaps.
edited to add:
Trump DID clearly read the remarks he made at the Alfred Smith dinner, but if you listen to his tone as he was reading, it was clear he was not comfortable with reading and phrasing at the same time.
It actually sounded like someone translating a foreign language.

(5,764 posts)I have strongly suspected for a long time now, that he can read only on the most rudementary level.

(9,115 posts)His illiteracy establishes plausible deniability re all those contracts he signed and violated, and all those sworn affidavits he signed where he committed perjury.
It offers him legal protection in court, in case one of the thousands of breach of contract suits against him goes south, drastically, and threatens to end up with his orange nazi ass getting tossed in to the klink.
I hear he always signs contracts by laboriously scrawling an "X", with his tongue sticking out of one side of his mouth. Many, many people are saying that.
