Why?
We're going to go straight from the "uppity" black president to the "bossy" female president.

(27,815 posts)Why should the first woman president be any more "grateful" or "humble" than every male president who has preceded her?
When HRC wins on Tuesday night, it will be because voters determined her to be the best person for the job of POTUS and CiC - which has nothing to do with her gender.
I stand to be corrected, but I don't remember Rather declaring that male presidents-elect should be "grateful and humble".
sarae
(3,284 posts)You don't remember him saying that about male presidents because I'm pretty damn sure he never said it...and probably never even thought it.
I don't understand. It's very simple people just need to ask themselves "Would I say or ask this about a man?" If the answer is no, then don't say it about Hillary Clinton. Why is that so hard for some people?

My hope for her is to just let her go and to have her back when she needs my support for something.

The racist crap came up with President Obama and now the sexist garbage is coming up with Hillary Clinton. Dan Rather, it is not up to you to tell a woman how to behave and what to do. Did anyone tell your sorry ass to be grateful and humble? So many men that don't have a clue about what this woman puts up with. So threatened by her that they try to diminish her. I'm gratified that he and his family have made it through eight years. I've lived all over this country and I know what a lot of people outside the biggest cities are like---and a few of them in the cities.
Rather's advice is good. However, she can't just sit back and take it while a bunch of partisan hacks try to dismantle a whole branch of government by refusing to fill vacancies. She needs to take that bullshit seriously and so does the DOJ.

that would indicate she needs this sort of advice from Dan Rather? If the OP's characterization is accurate, Rather is saying she needs to act a certain way, because she is female. There is, quite apparently, some internalized sexism at work here. It's as if he's cautioning her against being a 'bitch', or something.

He did not say he was modest and grateful for working for CBS as a male. The context is comepletely different.

And know that if he doesn't apologize for it HUMBLY within 24 hours I'll boycott every one of their sponsors and make sure every friend and family member of mine does the same! And I intend to invite three friends to write and tell them the same thing. Grateful for what? Working her ass off to EARN this job? Humble why? Because she worked her ass off and dealt with all that crap the media heaped on her, that Trump heaped on her, and that men like Rather are still heaping on her and STILL earned this job?

(15,805 posts)If Rather had added Trump to his Neanderthal advice, or even included all presidents, past, present and future, there would be no issue here. End of discussion. However, he didn't do that, he went low and delivered the classic sexist put down that us womenfolk have endured since the caveman days.
He only targeted Hillary, the first woman president, for a special 'Mad Men' style, misogynistic wisecrack that couldn't have been more inappropriate unless he'd also made a personal request for baked goods or offered advice on housekeeping chores. For women, for Democrats, Liberals, progressives and feminists, Rather's disrespectful injunction is on a par with the contemptuous rightwing comments aimed at criticizing our first black president as too 'uppity' or intellectual.
Look, telling any woman in the 21st century that she must appear properly 'grateful and humble', let alone a woman who just made history by becoming our first woman president, is a slap in the face. Hillary will be dignified and respectful of her place in history as she enters the presidency, but as the most powerful woman in the world, a position she earned through her own abilities, she has every right to be loud and proud.
Deal with it, now go bake us some cookies.
TheSarcastinator
(854 posts)Any elected official should be grateful and humble to serve the American people, no matter their gender, and it is not an insult nor a "slap in the face" to say so. Those who have historic presidencies, as we have with Pres. Obama and soon-to-be President Clinton, should be doubly humble and grateful to serve in that capacity as well.
But, hey, carry on, brave keyboard warrior. You sure seem to have your priorities straight and your anger directed at the proper sources.
Oh, and on edit: I LOVE to bake cookies, and if I had some right now, I would share.

(15,805 posts)right here in DU.
