I know there were no tanks in the streets, and I know we like to reserve that word for what we perceive as being 'banana republics,' but when a a nation's police force inserts itself into an election....either with bullets...or with a SMEAR campaign....that's what you call it. A COUP D'ETAT.
In 2004, terrorists in Spain set off a bomb in a commuter train three days before an election, in order to influence the outcome. They succeeded.
In 2016, the Russian government hacked into the emails of one of the political parties, and started leaking massive amounts of damaging information against them. Aside from nobody getting killed, how is that different?
And now we have one of the nation's police forces breaking protocol to smear one of the Presidential candidates in an attempt to influence the election. Aside from not having tanks in the streets, like we saw in Ankara Turkey last July, how is this different?
It's not.
We have to start thinking about this stuff for what it is. A para-military coup d'etat. The sooner we can call it what it is, the sooner we'll start treating it with the seriousness that it deserves.
