99% of my friends and family are Trumpkins. I deactivated my FB account before the election because I was going to burn down my timeline about their hypocrisy. I will go back at some point and have a dish to serve cold.
My brother called to wish me a happy birthday and then he decided to gloat. I ended up calling him a fucking moron and a quisling.
AND if one more person tells me to be tolerant and give that Butternut Turd a chance, they will catch a rant to remember.

We've, of course, also been separating socially as never before courtesy of the internet. The days are mostly gone when local societies developed group attitudes and mores that had a strong cumulative effect on their thinking. Political bigotry is stronger than ever, and revealing one's orientation has gotten a lot of people fired, so even more workplaces are separated out.
All a way of saying, if we want to fight the evil forces on the right, we first of all have to stay connected with those we know and maintain good relationships so that we may be able to influence them, if only to remind them that nice people can disagree.
As we are all appalled to know, the political belief systems required to vote Republican these days are almost entirely built on lies. Lies that have gotten so outrageous that sustaining their beliefs requires them to avoid not just virtually all honest information sources but also the evidence of their own eyes and even the teachings of their religions.
We thought this was the election the leaders lost their committed support. No. It was the election that proved beyond any doubt that their commitment to their political leaders now trumps all previous commitments to decency, morals, intellect, even religion. A scary and dangerous reality; but perhaps holding the door open, not slamming it on them, will hasten the day when enough finally do turn on their evil leaders and push them out of power. We don't need all that many to turn away for it to happen.

(7,618 posts)I may leave the door open, but they will have to come to me.
I distanced myself from a lot of friends and family in 2000. It's harder with family because they are irreplaceable. Still, the process was almost involuntary. I found that I had gone from respectfully disagreeing with family members to disrespecting their point of view and disrespecting them for being gullible and small-minded. I was not capable of the mental gymnastics required to exonerate friends and relatives for beliefs and behavior which I consider unacceptable for myself or for strangers.
Sixteen years later we get Trump. Most of the distancing from my family is already in place. I have moved and most of my new friends are like-minded...no accident. I still grieve over the election because I feel like I have lost my country.

(58,785 posts)is better, and the weight of fear is pushed back as I go about the day, but it hasn't slackened. Nor has the anger.
Too many people we knew have become worse and worse, to the point that their political behaviors deserve profound contempt. They are nothing but contemptible.
We were going to decline a dinner party, unwilling to be with those who did this, unwilling to listen to those unwilling to restrain themselves, but I actually have no idea how some of them are taking their new world where Donald Trump really will be able to launch nuclear war as well as tweets, they face return to "insurance" that will exclude coverage for all their medical problems, and the whole planet reverberates with shock and fear over what they have done.

Never have been happier that we do not have tv, thus easily avoided the constant visuals of Trump and ugly shouts from street level supporters.
My immediate neighbor is a Dem, thank god, and altho we live in a red red state, it is not considered proper to have disagreeable conversations here in the rural South, so church or politics is not much discussed .
but....
there were ZERO yard signs in the whole town.
Nada.

(58,785 posts)but then we're also in the top 5, sometimes cited as the top 1, most conservative districts in the nation. Very recently rural, now only semi.
This party is on a houseboat 45 minutes closer to "the city," though. Definitely different culture--somewhat mixed in various ways, race, religion, politics, state and national origin--but still averaging more conservative. And these days there is nothing moderate about the positions of loyal conservatives.
On the plus side, I seem to have lost a couple pounds without increasing exercise. Take care.

respect democratic norms. We are in totally uncharted waters now.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)we do not know if the right will succeed in empowering a shift to a fascistic pretend democracy. We're still very far from that. The people ELECTED Donald.
Not all conservatives are strong authoritarians. For those who are not, will what has become effectively fanatical support of "their side," with its corollary knee-jerk, no-matter-what opposition to Democrats, cause them all to submerge their very real fear of government power? Or will the existing glued-together schism widen back up?
When they are unable to purchase "insurance" coverage for any of their known medical problems, or have to choose a job or put the baby in daycare and go back to work only for the insurance benefits, will that have an effect? Will they resent the zealots who imply not having good coverage through work is somehow their own fault or who tell them, hey, just go to the ER and give a fake address like I do?
Will stories of tens, perhaps hundreds, of thousands of people, who once lworked in their towns, being imprisoned in inhuman conditions in deportee camps in the desert break through the casual callousness of those just going along with the rest now?
Will shame over international aggression and atrocities, and the humiliation of being condemned by hundreds of nations, the fear of losing national power and prestige, always cause them to draw together, or ... yada yada.
We won this election by the popular vote. I'm not convinced we didn't win it period. But we don't need them all, just some, and the forces of darkness are going to play hell keeping them all.

(7,908 posts)will still have a functioning free press and not some primitive version of samizdat. I do appreciate your thoughtful response, but ll bets are off now, as fascists don't respect liberal democratic norms (like a free press). Were I Donald, the first group I would intern would be the collective readership of DU and DailyKos (relying on FISA warrants and NSA data for membership lists), followed next by journalists who refuse to swear a loyalty oath. Then, and only then, would I turn to the ethnic and religious minorities.
At heart, you're assuming that the fascists share any of our values. I think that assumption is deeply flawed and that the only value they worship is the Nietzschean "will to power".

I like documentaries.
The article I posted was from the NY Times about how the US didn't take him seriously.
The US population was not fully aware, but many in power approved of Hitler's implementation of ideas born here. Beginning with a meeting between Charles Davenport, Harry Laughlin, and the American Breders Association along with a malinterpretation of genetics and the bell curve.
They were mainstream ideas. Sometimes expressed in teaching youth how to select suitable mates (in textbooks) and worse in involuntary sterilization of people with diabilities and people of color. Some was rooted in good intentions (Margaret Sanger, Alexander Graham Bell, and Helen Keller wanted to keep people who may suffer from being born). Some had the disgusting but not necessarily malicious goal to create a stronger work force, and the malicious racist element wanted to eliminate undesireables. They were working together with common goals which are with us today.
The US strived for a "Nordic superior race," - Germany for an "aryan master race" tomato tomahto.
If it hadn't happened in Germany it could easily have happened here. And, here we are and it appears that the hateful underpinnings of what happened in Germany were and are alive and well where it all started.
I'm working with a local activist group intent on dismantling racism. We seem to be making a difference.

I talked with friends, but we were all in the same mental state. I was told by one to just get a grip and accept it. After all, it was just an election. My cousin told me if I was worried about driving around in my car with Democratic-centric bumper stickers, I should take them off and replace them with Trump bumper stickers. Yes, he really said that. I am quite sure he has never heard the 'f bomb' strung together so many times, in once sentence. I don't expect to hear from him, again, any time soon.

(2,895 posts)I had already just about had it with my sister (my only sibling) and her family, and this just sealed the deal. My mom (only surviving parent, but my dad's politics were the same) hates Trump, but she is a right wing racist (you know, the somewhat more genteel, not so blatant type, but still pretty quickly obvious if you are paying any attention), so party before country. She seems to be avoiding talking to me at the moment (I'm sure the hell not calling her), probably because she knows I know she knows the guy is a disaster, so she is even more responsible for him (in my opinion) than my sister, who loved him from the start. My sister lives three thousand miles away, so I'm hoping not to ever see her again, but my mom is only 300 miles away, so I'll probably have to figure out a way to stomach being in her presence. (Not for these upcoming holidays, though.)
This isn't just about the election. I was always the family pariah/scapegoat since (early on) I diverged from the (Republican) party line and other family mores. I can't imagine what it would be like to have family members you otherwise value who would cast such an abhorrent vote. I already find my sister and mother abhorrent, so it just reinforces the existing narrative.

(2,565 posts)I don't have many Trump supporters in close proximity (physically or on social media) but am finding the fighting within the anti-Trump people to be very disturbing. It's almost like there's a force that is trying to divide within divisions--I am sure there is some great book someone wrote about how this happens, so if you know what it is, please recommend!
I am also looking for ONE non-fiction book to read that is about the people in Germany who knew Hitler was bad news early on and how they survive, supported friends, etc. Not the targeted ones--the ones who could have been mistaken for his supporters, but were not. If you have an idea let me know. I asked for this on another thread and someone suggested I "research." No time I want to spend on that if there's someone who already has a good one.

My 79 year old mom just had surgery....and it took everything I had to call and ask about her health. As I come out of the fog from our unexpected loss--I know I can't be around them for Thanksgiving this year--too soon. Maybe I can do a quick trip to see them for Christmas...but I don't know if I can be at my mom's 80th birthday party on the weekend of the inaugural.

(23,102 posts)Trumpers and Trumpettes are the worst form of human beings and they are a majority where I am. Luckily my family is blue all the way, but outside of my house, total other story. People that I thought were cool, educated, fun people have posted total idiotic pr-drumpf messages on FB. My husband and I are considering changing our standing Sat. night eating out place after years and years because the person that usually sits next to us is a rw nut, who's so certain that Drumpf won't cut his SS and Medicare, HA!
Drumpf is such a liar, he railed and railed against lobbyist and the fat cats and that's exactly who he's hiring? He said he'd never cut Social Security or Medicare and now is agreeing to sign the legislation that Ryan is advancing that will do even worse than that. There is no blind trust and Russia will be in charge of American foreign policy. Dark days are before us and I don't see an end. What will happen when the economy tanks, as it surely will? What will happen when old folks are dying because they wait too late to go to the doctor because of the huge bills they owe? What will happen when Judge Curiel denies his request to delay the hearing? What will happen when he refuses to attend the rape hearing? Will he shut down the investigation on Russia/FBI throwing our election? Isn't that scary that Russia and the FBI colluded to distort our democratic process?
One thing we've learned, a lot of fundamentalist Christians are a total joke and have no moral values. Putting a hooker in the WH, signing on for a man who's a serial assaulter. He's been sued 22 times for sexual assault and settled out of court to shut them up. He's in this to make himself rich since he's lost so much money since the sanctions were placed on Russia. He's even partners with the guy that wants to build nuclear plants in S. Korea. That's why he wants nukes there and in Japan, he'd personally profit A LOT.
I'm HOPING someone will show me a path out of this that would work. I've seen Michael Moore's 5 step plan, and it's good, but it's assuming America isn't destroyed by this ass, and I'm afraid that's going to happen. We barely survived Bush and he's Bushx1000.

(2,142 posts)You are not alone. We live in a very Trump-happy area, my brother is a raging Trump supporter, as are some uncles, aunts and cousins. Hubby's family is mostly Trump supporters too, with a few exceptions. My co-workers are a mix (though I suspect there are more R's than they let on. I work in education so they should NOT lean that way.) Hubby is miserably surrounded at work with only one other true Dem in the place (and he takes heat for it, too. He won't let me put up yard signs because his bosses greatly frown on him being liberal. The last time we had signs up, his boss said she wanted to tear through our yard and run them all over.)
We are dreading Thanksgiving. We don't live far enough away to make excuses not to go and my mother would be very upset if we didn't come.
Thankfully, my hubby, teenage kids, and my two sisters are all true blue. My mom leans blue, but is pretty moderate. Unfortunately, we are a pretty disfunctional family and have had many blow ups and conflicts over the years. My brother certainly NEVER deigns to keep his mouth shut in the interest of peace (and one of my sisters struggles with this too). My mom has given orders that politics are not to be discussed that day, but I doubt my brother or uncle will stick to that, and frankly, it will be hard for me not to slip and grumble something.
The problem for me goes deeper, though. It doesn't matter if politics are not discussed. I still have to LOOK AT and MAKE POLITE CONVERSATION with people whom I know to have voted for this catastrophe! How do I do that? I can't forgive these people for what they have wrought. I will never look at them the same way again, and yes, that is sad.
We desperately want to move, but have no options in that regard. Hubby has the opportunity for a new job, but it does not provide health insurance (nor does my job), so we would have to go on the ACA - but that is likely to be gone or gutted in short order. What the hell do we do? This election has had an immediate negative impact on us, and I am ANGRY at all these stupid fucks for doing this.

(47,152 posts)sorry to hear that so many of them supported Trump. Take a lot of deep breaths and focus on something other than politics for awhile. Take care.

(464 posts)It will take a time to feel that way. A Sister and I exchanged a few words and ended with a hug.
The beagle is upset, but he will stay calm and only react on command. He took this bad. After hearing th news, he trembled.
I keep finding people who were and are on our side. Maryland is safe. We need our family back in the rust belt. Those jobs are gone. There is stuff to be done, but it involves leaving home. I know they don't want to do that.

Thanksgiving should be interesting. We're not getting pulled into that discussion if it comes up. Most of my Republican siblings are sensible enough to not gloat or bring up politics, but it's the in-laws and others who don't seem to have any self control.

(23,317 posts)During the conversation she confided in me that she is gay and her parents (Trumpsters) rejected her when she revealed it to them. She knew we were rabid Hillary supporters and felt safe in telling us. She feels hopeless because of the rejection of her family and also unsafe in her country having newly come out. It took a long time to calm her down.
I am afraid for those in our nation who feel shattered and cannot reach out.
We need to continue to band together and take care of each other. I am grateful to have found DU.

(8,445 posts)He actually said he was wrong, but now I'm suspecting he's just saying it so I won't divorce him. That makes him a Trumpkin and a liar. If we weren't so intertwined with business I'd already have him gone. I'm honestly still in shock that everything I thought I knew about him is wrong. I don't know him at all.
Like you, my brother is also a Trumpkin. During the primaries he told me he didn't like Trump at all, but now he's all in on Trump. That makes him a hypocrite, so I'm thinking I don't need him in my life either. More than anything, like many right wing nuts, he is anti-Hillary. I just don't have any patience or tolerance for a grown-ass man who has never been open-minded enough to allow the facts into his mind. So I'm done. We've never been all that close anyway, so I won't miss him much.
What saves me is that my children (all grown) feel the same way I do. And they think my husband is bat-shit crazy. I'm not alone like you, but I do understand your pain. I hope DU is a place that gives you some sense of inclusiveness. I can't even express what it did to me to not be able to come here and read (I don't post much, but read often) on election night and the nightmare days that followed because of some f-ing loser horrid person who couldn't stand that we're allowed to having differing views in this country....at least for the time being. Time will tell on that issue.

https://newrepublic.com/article/138787/obama-can-put-merrick-garland-supreme-court
There's such a thing as being cooperative or "nice." But it's quite another to be UNWITTINGLY SUICIDAL. From the article:
There are consequences to one party being more aggressive about defying governing norms. If liberal legislation cant break a Republican filibuster, but Democrats dont offer the same resistance, the playing field is tilted to conservative policy. If Republicans use any maneuver to get appointees in place, and Democrats dont, conservatives become more likely to be ensconced at executive agencies. If Republicans are willing to blackmail the government and Democrats arent, they get more concessions from that blackmail. If Republicans use gerrymandering and voter suppression and every available tool more sharply than Democrats, we get conservative government even if we vote for a liberal one.
Democrats, in short, bring a butter knife to a gunfight. They may be correct on the merits that institutional norms allow the government to function properly. But as long as Republicans dont care about such niceties, that respect is equivalent to surrender.

(18,652 posts)I am involved in a local catfight to protect a small open space that the town gave away, illegally, to a developer. The people responsible and the people who covered it up (2/3 the same) are repugs. Two (legal) parties and three intervenors are now in court over approval of a settlement that boils down to: the town approves the worst kind of wetlands development.
I am an intervenor fighting this little fight and here is the rub: I am before a judge appointed by our Dem gov. Judge is doing flips to be fair. But he knows this whole issue involves an illegal giveaway of the property by repugs, who have kept our region in their sleazy hands for 25 years, b/c I've made it clear the "standard operating procedure" is in full force in our town and this development/settlement is just one example. SOP being certain things repugs do to obtain and remain in power-by-despotism.
This election has just given me more passion to let the repugs know it is not over, we are still protesting in our own little ways.
And even if our little trio loses in court, we put up a good fight and led the way for younger others to follow. The intervenors are 2 in their 60's and one 75 y.o.
