Washington Post: One by one, Republicans who stood up to Trump or questioned his statements and antics have made a pilgrimage to Trump Tower to kiss the president-elects ring, or joined his administration, or decided uncharacteristically to just keep their mouths shut. And at long last Tuesday night, the figurehead of the Never Trump movement also capitulated. After an intimate dinner with Trump of frog legs and diver scallops at a fine Manhattan restaurant (in a Trump-owned building, naturally), Romney publicly acquiesced.
In an apparent attempt to secure Trumps trust in him as a possible secretary of state, Romney lavished praise on the president-elect Romneys turnabout illustrates the power that comes with winning the ability to reshuffle the political hierarchy.

(37,428 posts)Given the abominable nature of their agenda, why would we expect principled stances against him?

(16,423 posts)The GOP can't bring itself to mention the words "George W. Bush", because he was such an utter failure. Trump will end the same way: The GOP will ignore and forget him the very second they can do so without alienating voters.
Expect the GOP to harp in 2024 what a great President Ronald Reagan has been... Because Bush was bland and Bush II and Trump shall-not-be-named.

I might have gained some respect for him had he stuck to his Never Trump guns. Now, it's revealed that Romney's Never Trump position was simple opportunism, reading the election tea leaves on what looked like a surefire Hillary win, with Trump going down in flames of historic proportions.
Now that the worm has turned, Romney's "deep convictions" are shown to have been no deeper than the first layer of his magic underwear. All he was doing was trying to set himself up as the go-to person once the Rs recovered from the 2016 election debacle and started to rebuild their party into something more moderate.
