(8,945 posts)WH says Pres Obama has gone longer without asserting Exec Priv in a Congressional dispute than any Pres in last three decades
Also
WH says Pres GWBush asserted Exec Priv 6 times, Pres Clinton 14 times involving same category of documents at issue today.
and
Nevertheless, Oversight Cmte Chair Darrel Issa, R-Ca., has convened hearing to vote on contempt citation against Atty Gen Holder.
He is a good guy to follow if you want to know what's happening, WH correspondent for CBS (and he likes to tweet a lot

(6,228 posts)Republicans hit back by sending reporters a snippet from a March 2007 interview in which Obama's condemned the Bush Administration's use of executive privilege "every time there's something a little shaky that's taking place" and urging that administration to "come clean."
Gotta agree. I am sick of corrupt politicians on BOTH sides.
hahahareally

(24,096 posts)goodness, the continual pressure they put on the President, it's just crazy. How the man doesn't just shatter under all that intense pressure is beyond me.

(31,706 posts)It's shades of "Disco" Danny Burton of the 90s...I'm just surprised its taken Issa this long to push the administration to issue some kind of Executive Privilidge.
This is the old rushpublican game of guilt by assumption and conspiracy. You create poutrage and a phony controversy and then push the administration and hope to embarass it and generate headlines. Few people will know this scandal has roots going back to 2004 or what the documents in question are...its all political theater that the cables are eating up. They can't wait for a "cat fight" to break out in that conference hearing.
We know that even if Holder turned over the documents in question it wouldn't be enough...the goal post would move and this circus will go on...

(1,214 posts)I'm sure a Romney Administration (shudder) would be completely open and would have no need to "come clean" in the first place.

(4,112 posts)5. Reagan. President Reagan directed the assertion of executive privilege
before congressional committees three times: by Secretary of the Interior James Watt
with respect to an investigation of Canadian oil leases (1981-82); by EPA
Administrator Ann Burford with respect to Superfund enforcement practices (1982-
83); and by Justice William Rehnquist during his nomination proceedings for Chief
Justice with respect to memos he had written when he was Assistant Attorney for the
Office of Legal Counsel in the Department of Justice (1986). Rozell, supra, at 98-
105.
6. Bush, George H. W. President Bush asserted privilege only once, in
1991, when he ordered Defense Secretary Cheney not to comply with a congressional
subpoena for a document related to a subcommittees investigation of cost overruns
in, and cancellation of, a Navy aircraft program. Rozell, supra, at 108-119.

(12,461 posts)Yanno I hate that term. Call me pollyann'ish, I prefer to believe the majority of the American people are smarter than what credit is given.
The GOP has done nothing but undermine the legitimacy of this President. This is just another sack of shit thrown at him. From questioning his citizenship, to questioning his patriotism, to questioning his integrity, outright calling him a criminal. Not one shred of evidence.
Now by proxy, attacking the Attorney General, to get at Obama. To undermine him at every turn. I hope the people see this, it's fucking obvious what they are doing and why.

(18,998 posts)They are the ones that listen to National Hate Radio all day long and think Rush Limbaugh is the truth teller of the world...and where ever these shepherds of hate lead the they will follow ....I think sheeple is a fine term for them.
And if you listen to programs like Washington Journal on Cspan you will hear them speak...they will always say Obama is a communist and they will repeat word for word what Rush said the day before...that is the people I call sheeple.
This Is witchhunt. This program started under Bush.No a single person from the Bush administrationg has been called to testify.
Holder stopped this program.Issa doesn't want documents.Holder has been willing to work with him to get them.He wants to hold
Holder In contempt.
You have the first black attorney general for the first Black President being first Attorney General threatened with contempt of congress.
Geez I wonder why that Is
Obama Is in fourth year In office and this Is first time he has used executive prevledge. For over 30 years both Democrats and Republicans before Obama used It far more than him.
