Donald Trump and the Bill of Wrongs

It’s not just that he’s a vulgar, swaggering jerk. It’s not just that he has a hideous record of mistreatment of women. It’s not just that he stiffs those who work for him. It’s not just that his social interactions are based on the behaviors of a 13-year-old boy. It’s not just his ease with lying. It’s not just his reckless belligerence. It’s not just his inciting of violence toward anyone who dares to question him or disagree with him. It’s not just his slimy belittling of people with disabilities. It’s not just his elevation of those who share his distaste for people of color. It’s not just his preference for revenge against anyone who exposes his errors. It’s not just his greed that informs his every decision and allows him to maintain undisclosed business relationships with those who are stated enemies of this country. It’s not just his sneering contempt for those who pay taxes while he apparently doesn’t. It’s not just his failure to appreciate any of the many blessings in his life. It’s not just his inability to comprehend the depth and breadth and weight of the office. It’s not just his refusal to appoint people who are actually appropriate to the task.

It’s all that, and so much more, combined with his glaring and smug ignorance of the Constitution, that causes us to cringe at the prospect of his impending administration. The presidential oath of office contains a promise “to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” But by his routinely demonstrated blithe indifference to that document he himself has taught us that, no matter how high the stack of Bibles on which he takes the oath, Donald Trump is already proving to be the most dire domestic threat to this nation in our lifetime.
