With a special prosecutor it might find out about collusion between putin and trump
in regards to rigging the election and other illegal practices that trump engaged in during his campaign.
Jeebus, pence would probably be worse than trump.

(12,904 posts)I just think it would be interesting to see how/when they might turn on him. Nice to imagine all the ways he could get his due.

(3,495 posts)I think they're too afraid of upsetting Trump's rabid followers to try dumping him now.

(11,481 posts)And I predict the problems will come a couple of years in over globalization OR a new Great Recession.
And I also predict that he will resign under the THREAT of impeachment rather than being impeached and convicted.

(19,240 posts)Because Trump's base is bat shit crazy. If the GOP tries to unseat him, they will declare them disloyal--and by the outlaws code, that makes them targets.

(25,024 posts)else and the people get angry, even the GOP base, Ryan, McConnell and crew will point their fingers at Trump and say "He did it! You knew you couldn't trust him, look what that incompetent fool did"
And the GOP base will bite on it hook line and sinker

(43,879 posts)You fail to understand that more people voted for Trump than for all repub house candidates (winning and losing) combined.

(296 posts)For now, I suspect they'll play nice with him because as even they said, "He has no real stance on the issues, he's like a piece of unformed clay that they can mold". I'm also fairly certain that people like Ryan and McConnell will turn their heads as Trump robs us all blind and exploits the office in ways that would even make Nixon blush. Then, the instant he doesn't conform to what Ryan and McConnell want, they'll use what they know to burn Trump to the ground knowing Pence is waiting the wings once he's impeached.
At least that's how I believe this mess will play out. We've already seen Mitch taking steps to ensure nothing will ever come from the Russian hacking investigation.

(11,843 posts)If the goal is to screw Trump, any of a number of ethics violations will do. An election investigation will be a white wash because it could throw them out of power. McTurtle already has relegated it to "normal" channels where it will simply disappear.
Pence would be worse, he actually has a clue what he is doing and I fear a theocracy more than an idiocracy.

(36,649 posts)But Trump is a ticking time bomb. As soon as it looks like he's gong to crash & burn, they'll turn on him like a pack of hungry wolves. It won't be pretty.

I doubt they are even considering Trump in this equation.

(611 posts)He's a good media lightning rod for them, at least in the short term. They can use him for distraction, perhaps lay all the blame on him for unpopular actions taken by their party and its larger movement. But they won't want to let their movement be defined by Trumpism, in the longer term. Trump, Pence, and Ryan are all pretty scary, representing different factions of the RW movement. Sooner or later, the factions they represent will be in conflict, each trying to define the future of the party. And Cheney's back in there, apparently, trying to make sure the Neocon faction doesn't get lost in the shuffle. When they start to fight over the future of their party, Trump is probably the easiest fall guy. I doubt the Big Money types behind the party really want Pence's Wannabe Theocracy any more than Trump's brand of populism.
There was a lot of talk on our side about how the Repugs have a fragile coalition, during the election. That's still true. The coming years won't be fun, but watching how they fall apart will at least be interesting.

(38,707 posts)They'll read the words and sign the papers.
When they go off script the press will politely look the other way and cover for them.
I attended an event where Ronald Reagan made an appearance during his second term. What I saw, what everyone must have seen, was a confused old man who didn't know where the hell he was or what he was doing there. Nevertheless he managed to get off a few sound bites, and those were what the television news showed. The local paper reported the event as his handlers had planned it, complete with quotes from Reagan that I'm pretty sure he never said that night, not even to any reporters behind the curtain.
Just watch, somebody will cut off Trump's tiny little twitter thumbs soon. The twitter account will remain active, written by staffers, and idiot celebrity journalists will use these tweets as evidence that Trump's politics have "matured" or some similar nonsense.
Trump is a thin skinned narcissist and Pence is a knob. The actual job of President, the real work behind the scenes, will be done by big money Republican committee, the same sort of guys who kept GWB's dick out of the pencil sharpener.
