Hello All,
I have read this forum for several years now. This is my first post. I read it every night before I go to the land of Nod. I feel like I know so many of you. I have kept up with Tobin and his job search, everyone with their family and Pet issues etc. This forum has been very important and is a place of kindred spirits. Thank you Admins for sustaining it through the hack and keeping it going.
I just finished watching the recent final interview with the first Lady. It was so emotional to think what we are leaving behind, and the world we are about to enter in to. She was spot on with her comments about Hope. Looking back over their term, Hope is what we had. We must maintain Hope. Every night I read, I see none. How do we engage the electorate and fix this?
How do we get that back? I keep going back to the idea we must secure new, fresh and aggressive leadership. We must get loud. We can not just sit on our hands and let all this happen. Every night I read looking for some semblance of hope and there is none. We need an active, opposition party.
How do we engage the electorate without them losing face? That will be part of the key.
We are in such a mell of a hess. If we do not get loud, engaged, quickly we will be expunged as a party. We have no leadership.
Thanks to all for this forum. Have a great Holiday!

Welcome to DU! And yes, Michelle Obama was/is/will always be someone to look up to, as is her hubby. That was a good interview.

(12,336 posts)The Wielding Truth
(11,415 posts)I think that elections matter in a democracy and the will of the people must be heard, but the people must not be lied to. It is so important in these "opposite world" times that we work to bring truth to light - all the time. When the manipulated right wing realize that Trump has had them buy the balls they will want to restore their and our freedoms. It will be a tremendous struggle now to change us back into a caring and responsible union that is on the road to perfection, but we have to save it and us.
First I propose that we, as always, contact the jokers who are in charge everyday now, and give them our feedback. We are the majority and even their customers so complain and make it big.
Next we must find those of us who can take our views to congress and financially support their installation.
Once we can assure the congress is open to progress we must over turn Citizens United and reinstate the Fairness doctrine.
Review of the election voting machine must be thoroughly pursued, because a vote without a verifiable record is not a legal vote.
Trump's a huge bully who is running over us. Bully's must be stood up to. We must let him see, at every opportunity, that he is hurting his brand by being a traitor to democracy and he will be seen in history as the man who destroyed America. It's grandiose, but it is a reality he will relate to.
Don't give up hope that those who saw Trump as a Savior will mightily regret their abandon of reality.

I think your points are excellent, and I agree we need fresh, aggressive leadership. It is time for "coulda, woulda, shoulda" to be put behind us and to reach for our progressive future together.

(3,284 posts)Different answers to both. Your ideas are perfect in the short term. New leaders that are currently in the political pipeline and are in the public eye. Ones who are liked and espouse the loud, active leadership that we need right now.
But longer term, it's important to build a new and broader base. We need to engage the enthusiastic and engaged youngsters who were brought out by this election, and make sure that they remain enthusiastic and engaged, and also that they get involved. They need to get involved in local politics, city counselors, school board trustees, then eventually mayors, governors, congresscritters, and senators. Sheriffs and judges. We need to make sure that the left, the liberals, and the progressives overtake the right by sheer force of numbers. We need to embarrass the regressive GOP into irrelevance with pure force of enthusiasm.

(185 posts)We won. More votes are cast for Dems than for the Fashists. More Americans vote for the good and not the evil. Even with all the hate radio and owned media Americans vote for the good. Now we just have to figure out how to get into office. Gerrymandering, the EC, and small state Senators are killing us. This is what we have to figure out.

(10,427 posts)Dems remake the country after the Repugs shatter it. A seemingly endless cycle.. Springtime will come again. Be ready. In the meantime we rebuild the party at the local level and try to get the Bernie folks to come in. Biden and Obama can be elder statesmen. Bernie is still around. Warren, Duckworth and others are in office. Have hope...

(29,294 posts)My glimmers of hope are focused on Schumer, Sanders and Warren. Based on what's come from them in the past few months, it seems that we are on a new track that will reinvigorate and coordinate resistance while building grassroots organizing. Obama's pledge to develop up-and-comers adds to this, although it's not clear how much scope/influence that will be able to have.
Warm welcome to you!

I agree with these statements. I'm glad to hear Obama say that he's going to focus on new, young leadership, but I hope that it's not too late. The dems should have been doing this all along. I can't think of one young person who has national name recognition. They better get busy.
Personally, I give the dems a 1-in-10 chance of ever seeing control of the Senate & House in my lifetime.
on edit: I suggested sometime ago that the dems put up Sheldon Whitehouse, cuz at least he has a name people will remember.

(70,394 posts)i have seen actions here seep out into the real world a lot more often than people think. money and volunteers raised for du'ers who rose to the challenge and ran for office. petitions signed. folks who get together irl to work together.
and information is always power. see-the hack.
and of course, we keep each other bucked up.
i think we all have a bit more hope than we let on. it is buried in dread right now, but we will rise.

(13,776 posts)It might be gratifying to us to see them ashamed and embarrassed once they realize Trump will not be their savior after all, but feeling ashamed and embarrassed isn't going to lead them over to our side--it'll just cement their resolve to be different from us. So I think you made a very good point.

(28,895 posts)Trump is nobody's savior but his own. My hope is just that there is something recognizable about America once he is finished with us. I do believe he will leave his supporters at least disillusioned, at best apoplectic. As long as we are a bully nation, I don't see much hope.
Unlike President O, who leaves with total respect and honor. Best wishes to our President, my President and his beautiful family.

(11,087 posts)I love the war on Christmas stupidity. Conservatives get all fake outraged if coffee cups don't say, "Merry Christmas and support the one True Religion" on them. Meanwhile, three days before Christmas, Donald tweets about expanding our nuclear arsenal. Because that's his version of "Peace on Earth, good will to men."
Anyway, welcome, and merry winter solstice.

(43,548 posts)They are Great Recession era babies. The economic times shaped them
just like the Great Depression shaped my parents and grandparents.
I suspect Millennials will not support exploitation and theft and
environmental degradation. But they must be reached. Note that
Bernie had a plan to reach them, and trump did not and does not.
trump is the throwback generation. 1925 version.
We must organize. Organization and outreach, past union halls and
county committees.
By the way, we will get a lot of help. donald trump will be himself. He
can't help it. And things are going to get very fouled up. Forehead-slapping
fouled up. It will make no sense, and then we will wake up the country.

(17,778 posts)It is so nice to meet you!
I was just thinking about the same thing myself, how do we engage the electorate, or just our neighbors?
One thing I was batting around was convening community meetings in which the community
1. Brainstorms topics of importance to us
2. Prioritizes them
3. Set up working groups.
Non partisan, as the goal is to bring people together. Without waiting for the city or the state to do it, because they can't do it for us.
These meetings would need to have a few volunteer facilitators to record the brainstorming and facilitate the priority setting process.
Hey but I'm full of ideas...

It's something new and more extreme every day. If nothing else we have entertainment every day right? How far will it go? What new nutty tweet or appointment happened today? Every day it's something. Then every day it's worse than the day before. A real life tv show of the worst imaginable. Scary times indeed.
