(27,985 posts)and we didn't see Neoliberalism as a danger, so we stood down and since we didn't have a common enemy, infighting happened. I left. I came back on the election night. Not successfully, as we know. I was here as soon as I could be and I have full faith that we will bring ourselves back up to speed much faster this time.
Good thing, because the stakes are actually much higher.
We will never be good at fighting Neoliberalism because some very large portion of us identifies with it and believes it is synonymous with Democrat. It is not, but if that is one's POV, then we would have seen the same strange dynamic that we saw with Obama at the helm. He's not a bad person, neither is Hillary, but neither are they liberal. This site is a giant tent that includes people like them and people like me who are extremely liberal to the point that I might even be called fringe here.
The only silver lining and man, it is such a small silver lining is that we aren't facing Neoliberalism, an entity we can't even agree on whether it's bad or good or something in between. Rather we are facing Facism, something we can quickly get our heads around and begin (are already) fighting.
Oh, and for those of you who are going to bellyache that we aren't doing anything but bitching from our computers. Speak for yourself. I've already gotten frostbite and the Cheetolinni hasn't even been sworn in. I think I'm getting ear rot from being on hold with the speaker. And my pocketbook is much emptier for having sent money no less than 20 directions.
I'm not the only DUer working hard. I post on Holidays and in the middle of the night.

The plutocracy is terrified of anyone to the left of Mussolini, even mainstream liberals.

(67,108 posts)surely have a global job and billions of people to track. Guess that's why they needed expanded facilities in Langley, thought Trump or Trump-like politician might be coming along.

All political sites of any decent size are monitored already.

(37,324 posts)would worry about the NSA. The NSA is interested in enemies of the U.S.A.
If I were in a right-wing militia or a GOP member in the habit of divulging state secrets, yes. Then I would worry.

(146,288 posts)Makes no sense at all. There's nothing here that would even vaguely interest the NSA. The FBI, maybe, but not the NSA.

(34,845 posts)The NSA, as you no doubt are aware, is forbidden by law from spying on domestic Americans. If you have evidence that they are routinely abusing this check on their power, please share it.
Usually the arguments boil down to: "But you know they are!" But most of us don't operate from knee-jerk fear that makes us feel relevant and powerful because large, amorphous enemies are conspiring against us.
At least I hope we don't.

(30,058 posts)saying they would like to see the president dead, etc, yes they are watching. They are watching all the social media, this is a source of recruitment for radical groups, even radical groups here in the US. This is a communications source.

(19,240 posts)Try 2001, when Cheney started the warrant-less wiretap system. Assuming DU existed in 2001. Good lord! The US government knows everything about everyone of us. That is why it is so silly for anyone to keep quiet and not complain for fear of attracting the attention of the wrong people. Get out there and protest if you want to. They already know who you are and have the programs in place to seize your assets and plant kiddie porn on your computer whenever they deem it necessary.
There is only one way to fight this kind of tyranny. Make them afraid to give you the kind of publicity that you can not buy. If they think you will profit politically or economically from becoming a martyr they will back off. And limit your attachments. If there is nothing they can take away from you that matters more than your civil liberties they will lose.
I use the word "they" in its usually understood sense of Big Brother. However, it is important to keep in my that We are They They/We exist because they/we give us lots of stuff life security in an insecure world and food in a starving world. They/we can not take away those basic things without toppling they/our power.

(32,886 posts)individual website is perhaps not the way to think about it.
Yes, they have our browsing activity here and everywhere else. Ironically, there is protection from surveillance just in the massive amount of data they would need to sift through to zero in on you or this website. They would need a reason to do that for you/me/us. There is too much information to keep track of everyone.
