Protocol calls for former Presidents to not critique the incoming...but these aren't "protocol" times we live in are they?

especially since Trump is not honoring the one president at a time rule

Inevitably, he will be confronted with a bunch of "how badly has Trump messed up" questions later in 2017 and however long Drumpf lasts before getting impeached.
I think Obama will be reluctant to criticize Don the Con directly except on particular issues. Obama is masterful at stating his case without sounding petty or taking potshots, but he will probably be direct when the Drumpf administration makes a major misstep.
